Quirks with the M32 (Bug?)

Post by benulous » Tue Mar 01, 2016 4:21 pm

I have two M32s that I have in the 2-tier Moog Stand w/ both plugged from 1/4" output into channels on my mixer. I have one of them plugged into MIDI from my computer for when I use my DAW (Logic), but I haven't been using it much and, instead, have just been playing with my analog CV playground. So, the MIDI cable is plugged in only for when I fire up logic. For CV sync, I have one ASSIGN OUT plugged to the other TEMPO. I'm enjoying them a lot...however, I've run into two problems that have occurred more than once:

1. My sequences have disappeared from the one of my M32s.
2. Both will stop responding to input till I reboot them if I leave them powered on long enough.

I'm not sure if this is the reason, but I often leave all my gear turned on for a few days at a time and I've noticed that over time, one, or both, of my M32s will stop responding to input. You can't trigger via midi or the front panel until you reboot. Also, over the last couple days, the sequences I've saved to one of my M32s have suddenly...DISAPPEARED. I had 4 sequences saved that I'd been experimenting with and they are now gone. I could see accidentally deleting one...but, not all of them. I think there may be a glitch. :-/

Has anyone else experienced these issues?

Ben

I had some sequences go MIA as well. 4 out of 5.
Cant pin down when it happened.
I don't leave mine on for more than a session, and haven't had freeze issues.

I was able to do some more testing today.

I have my iMac plugged into my 4x4 MIDISport and one of those MIDI OUTS is plugged into the MIDI IN of my lower M32. I was organizing a new Logic default template today (deleting old MIDI Instrument/Devices, adding the new ones, setting up channels in the environment, doing some test run on all the gear, etc)...

Everything was running just fine. In LOGIC, I have MIDI SYNC preferences set to 'all' (which is a real downer that Logic only allows you to EITHER send CLOCK to 1 or 2 devices OR ALL devices and you can't turn off the MIDI Message on the M32). After testing and getting it the way I wanted, I stopped everything, turned off LOGIC and, a few minutes later, I went to fool with the M32s on their own. I found it the MIDI'd M32 was no longer sending audio, again! The lights were responding to me pressing start/stop, tweaking tempo, playing the pads, etc - but no sound. My other NON-MIDI'd M32 still played just fine. I unplugged/replugged the power of the MIDI'd M32 - first, for a couple seconds...then, for a few minutes. Still no sound. THEN, I fired up LOGIC again. Once the session was up, I tried to play the M32. Nothing.

It was only when I pressed the transport start in LOGIC and the Midi clock was sending to the M32 did did it start generating noise again!

I then tweaked some knobs and played around for a bit. Pressed stop and kept playing with the M32. Then, closed out LOGIC and the M32 is still playable and generating sounds.

SO, I believe the M32s are getting hung up in some kind of MIDI Notes off till it receives clock again.

Perhaps a MIDI Panic feature should be added to future updates?

Did you unplug the MIDI cable during that episode?

Yeah, I did unplug/plug it back in and it still didn't generate sound...not till I sent MIDI Clock again...

I have a three tier setup. All have midi cables going in. I use cv too sometimes from assignable out to tempo of next one. When they go to sleep on the midi, I have hit the minikeys on them or started the sequencer and it wakes them up fine. I think I unlugged midi cable before starting the sequencer. Has only happened twice on me.

They really have to sit for awhile with no activity to go to sleep. Just midi affected by it.

I thought I had sequences disappear too, but I was my missing that there are 8 x 8 sequences. I was on a bank I had not saved any sequences on when I thought mine were gone. Cycling through the 8 banks and 8 sequences I found my missing sequences on another bank.
