From Sub37 to Model 15?

Post by 825463 » Mon Mar 01, 2021 3:41 pm

Hi Model 10/15 owners,

I've been playing synths only a few years but I've had a sub 37/DFAM/M32 etc for a while now. However I'm intrigued by the model 15/10. I'm tempted to cash all my synths in and just invest my time in becoming an expert at model 10 or 15. For some reason it feels like it'll be neater to have 1 instrument and dedicate my time to it. I like that it's more unusual too. (Appreciate I'd need a keyboard/sequencer). What can I expect from a model 10 or 15?

Are there many key Sub 37 sounds that a model 15 isn't capable of?
Will a model 10/15 sound more raw or powerful? (I have a Taurus 1 which to me feels more raw and powerful to me)
Are there any reliability issues with a Model 10/15?
Anything else I should think about?

Thanks
Rob

The Model 10/15 do sound different. And both do not sound like the Sub37. And the original Taurus does sound different too.
The Model 10 901 VCOs sound more raw and bold as the later 921 VCOs of the Model 15.
The Model 10 901 VCOs are most likely never scaling perfectly over more than 3 octaves. And it needs retuning when the temperature changes, even if you had warmed it up for 15+ minutes first.

You might miss the patch memory of the Sub37. And remember: the Model 10/15 are without a keybed. You need a CV keybed or a MIDI-CV converter plus a MIDI keyboard to play notes.

But comparing a modular with a monophonic synth with memory and keybed is a bit like comparing apple and bananas. You work very different with these. And the way you play them is different too. No mod wheel on a modular. Patching vs. recalling a patch from the memory slots. No arpeggiator vs. no keybed included.

I am using modular and monophonic and polyphonic synths here. And hardly ever had the same sounds on these. And I use them for different things. While I play mono and poly synths by their keybeds, I use step sequencers (analog and hybrid ones) for the modular or trigger FX sounds manually.
keep on turning these Moog knobs

Sequence:
Prodigy * minimoog '79 * Voyager * MF102 * MF103 * MF104z * MP201 * Taurus 3 * Minitaur * Sub Phatty * MF105 * Minimoog 2017+ MUSE * One 16

This is what I've just done - Sold all my monosynths to buy something I've always dreamt of owning and using.

Just got to get aquainted with how fully modular synthesisizers work now!

Thanks for responding, it’s been really helpful. I’ve decided to go for it!

You may find yourself wanting an expansion cabinet to go with it. Perhaps an 8u cabinet for extras like a sequencer, filters, or another vca. Or a Kenton Pro-2000 for Midi-CV Conversion.

Stay tuned because I am in the process of working on a Moog vs Moslab comparison.
