"unintended PWM"

Post by miczac » Thu Aug 10, 2017 8:05 am

Hi,
in an article of a German magazine, when talking about design issues of vintage gear, which sometimes led to today's hyped character of a particular instrument:
The author tried to give an example and he casually mentioned an "unintended PWM on the VCOs of the Moog modulars".
Alas he wasn't specific enough to name a model number of the synth or module or such.
Anyone knows what he's probably talking about?
Thanks - Michael.

Well it can only be either the early 901's or the later 921's... Moog Modulars only use those... and my bet is it's the 901...:)

Maybe tell us exactly which article you read this in so that anyone with technical knowledge who can help you knows the exact context of the statement.

In German Synmag the author tried to give an example for a "happy accident" in synth design and he casually mentioned an "unintended PWM on the VCOs of the Moog modulars". Nothing more. It was merely a line, but it got my attention and I became curious.
I have no 901s or 921s, and the 901s I worked with were so heavily modified they probably wouldn't reveal such a thing. So I can't tell from experience.
But maybe it's just nonsense?
I'll try to get in touch with the author.

What were the 'modifications" if you don't mind me asking....?
