CP4A and Envelope Trigger Help - System 35

Post by mdn303 » Thu Mar 24, 2016 1:39 am

Hi I'm lucky enough to be working with a Studio that bought a new Modular 35 + Controller Keyboard

I think I have a problem with my CP4A
It's not triggering from the controller keyboard. Seems like the BUSS switches that couple 902 and 911 aren't working.
When i patch cables into it it triggers EG only from Trigger 2 an 3 not from 1.

Am I missing something?

Faulty switch or switches...?
Check them with a meter for continuity... should take 2 minutes,,, :)

what keyboard are you using?

If the keyboard is connected to CV Bus 2 & 3, you’re not going to get anything out of CV Bus 1.

I'm using the Modular Controller Keyboard from Moog.

It's connected via the 2&3 Controller.
Problem is that as my pic shows.. I only get sounds(EG triggered) when the cables are patched in.

No trigger when i'm using the buss switches and the controller keyboard.
Seems like the Buss switches have no effect or aren't receiving signal from the controller keyboard.

This could be the root of your problem...? If you look closely, on the top of that CP4 switch panel is clearly says "Trig 1 Routing"
Only a Trigger feed from the 'Controller 1' input on the rear will go to those switches...!

Tom

Thanks Tom,. Ok so trigger 1 only goes to the routing.. But the controller keyboard is set to trigger 2&3 as per the setup instructions on the keyboard controller manual.

So how do I go about getting trigger 1 to fire from the controller keyboard so i can fire the envelopes?

Then I can route the trigger to the Centre 902/911 and right 902/911

I don't know exactly because I only have an old R.A.Modular set up. I am not familiar with the new Moog builds.

But with mine, on the rear connectors panel... only "Controller 1" trigger feed goes to those green and white switches. CV from all three Controller inputs appear on the three sets of CV jack sockets and also the three sets of trigger signals appear on the relevant 'Cinch Jones' trigger connectors, from Controllers #1-3.

I believe the "input' to those trigger routing switches comes from the Cinch Jones #1 connector which is right next to them. Could you pop the panel and check? Also like I said before it would be a simple case of finding where it goes with a meter to confirm..!

It could just be a broken wire or a wire that has come away from where it should got to... or even a faulty selector switch.
It does happen you know.

Cheers,
Tom

I'd contact the fine people over at Moog. If you are using it incorrectly, they'll let you know. If there's possibly something wrong, they'll run you through a quick test to see. Either way, they are your best bet.

Did send a support email and haven't heard anything. Can you recommend anyone there?

I have the original schematic for the System 35 and ONLY the first barrel connector is wired to the CP4a.

Kevin Lightner (RIP) has the schematics on his Synthfool site but it's a bit difficult to follow because it's upside down and split across images; so have a look here: http://flic.kr/p/FHxJVW <-edit, fixed the bad URL

You may also notice that the barrel connectors for keyboard 1 (left) and keyboard 2&3 (right) are wired identically for the primary pins therefore, if you configure your 953 for a Model 15 and connect the keyboard to the keyboard 1 connector, it should work as you would like.

Of course, the 953 has no 'mono / duo' switch, so if you this does work for you and you play legato, your 2nd note won't do anything, however if you look at the bottom of the schematic, you'll see connectivity to the 91-201 PC board and I have a hunch that this is wired to the Controller Interface (1,2,3 CV and trig outs).

Maybe try this and let us know if it worked.

You mean 'trigger-wise' to the CP4a routing switches...!?
Connectors 1,2&3 of course all appear on the CP4a jack and Cinch-Jones sockets for trigger and CV...!

Tom

Indeed. MDN303 (the OP) posted on Muffs originally saying that he had the new 953 keyboard plugged into a Model 35 [new] and it wasn't working.

Was a big of a go-around, but the "Controller Outputs" seem to be working properly. Obviously, the 953 has to be strapped correctly (startup sequence that says model 35/55 vs. model 15) and you have to plug it into the correct jack in the rear but the problem of the Trig routing switches was still outstanding. If it were mine, I'd just rewire it. But yes.

Do we know what this "start-up" sequence actually does..?
I am assuming it reconfigures the pin-outs...?

That's what the doc suggests: http://www.moogmusic.com/sites/default/ ... _27[1].pdf

But the original schematic for the model 15/35/55 shows the same pin-outs. It's possible that Moog made either the Model 15 or 35/55 different than the original on reissue. I have the original schematics from a vintage service manual and it reads to me as identical except that on a 35/55, you use the 2nd barrel connector.

Andy Hughes comes on the forum from time to time and lists himself and two others as prime people to contact. That being said, email is not as reliable as we might hope for. I'd recommend calling them even if you're overseas. I've always gotten extremely good help (and quick) every time I've called over the years.
