Grove Audio GMS-294a VCF (a 904A clone)

Obviously not an exact clone, at least not physically since it is a single width module and has extra attenuators for CV and signal input.

Available both assembled and as a kit. I built this from an early beta version of the kit to test and report on (and hopefully improve) the assembly instructions and build experience. It is a really a great sounding filter and I think it recaptures the "Moog Sound" in general, although I haven't done a side by side comparison to an actual Moog 904A.

Here is some 'careless' fiddling around with the GMS-294a using one MOTM-300 VCO, an LFO (for PWM), two MOTM-800 EGs, a MOTM-190 VCA and Moon 569 sequencer. Also a Modcan 73B dual delay and Strymon BigSky reverb.

John,
Is Grove in regular contact with people and still up and running? I had heard he wasn't in good health. I have been thinking about his Polymoog resonator module.

I really like the Grove Audio Polymoog resonator I have! Yeah, John Burdij and Grove Audio are still going. 8)

As with a lot of small manufacturers though, some customers have suffered fulfillment and communications disappointments with Grove. :( The biggest sore spot was the crowd funded sequencer that never (or at least still) hasn't shipped. It took quite a while but I'm pretty sure everyone has been refunded at this point. I think John' is a good guy and his intentions are good but he bites off more than he can chew sometimes, IMHO.

If you look at his blog he posts several times a year there with new designs:

His Facebook page is here:

And he attended Knobcon just last week and had a table setup with a large MU system to show of his current and future offerings.

Ordering from his online shopping system has been not the easiest (meaning it often didn't seem to work, at least in the past) so direct email ordering worked better.

So, I'd say that in my experience, ordering from Grove Audio may take a fairly above average amount of effort and patience but it has always been worth it. 8)

John,
Do you have any hands and ears on with the Grove quad VCA? Looks like a nice unit.
