It took a while, but I think I figured out the X/Y grid. You have over 50 different timbres to choose from and you assign a timbre to 8 different horizontal zones. The zones crossfade in the up/down direction depending where you cursor is.
The parameters of the timbre are tweeked by swiping left to right. Here the SupaPhasor timbre is having it's Phasor frequency changed.
Use the TIMBRES tab and touch the zone you want to change, then choose a timbre from the list...

That makes sense. I think my problem was seeing timbres as samples, but they're more than that.
