Re: Taurus 1 vs Taurus 3 comparison video
Can't say one is better than the other but they do sound different in this video.
Might have been nice to tweak the sounds a bit closer - I'm sure it can be done. The Rez preset is difficult to match as the controls don't directly correspond.
Was this done with the pre-fix Taurus I preset?
Also with the TIs there are at least three caveats:
1. The aging of the components.
2. The type of components (TIII I assume uses modern equivalents).
3. Have the TI's been calibrated recently to original factory specs (within the boundaries set by point 1)?
Nice to see though - would like a few more videos.

Re: Taurus 1 vs Taurus 3 comparison video
there's an awful lot of digital noise or artifacts from either the original recording or the compression of the video to youtube. i'm thankful for his contribution but definitely wish he had made a better quality video of his comparison.
edit: sounds like the noise is from the original recording.

Re: Taurus 1 vs Taurus 3 comparison video
Admittedly Youtube and perhaps the video has pretty compromised sound but it is easy to note that the presets are rather different. It makes me wonder how much one chalks the difference up to vintage units sounding different from each other to begin with as well as their old components compared to how much of an effort Moog Music did and did not take to replicate the old sound on the 3.

There are differences as sure as eggs is eggs !
Let's enjoy T3.
Preset Taurus sound in T1 is very unique.
Attack is a little bit off.
Filter is opend during the first 2 or 3 seconds and is closed gradually.
As far as I hear T3's preset Taurus sound, the filter opened degree is not changed.
It is similar to detune sound of Valiable mode in T1 or T2 itself.
Anyway, my T3 will come in two weeks.
I am looking forward to playing with it

Re: Taurus 1 vs Taurus 3 comparison video
FWIW, Moog did have a T1 while they were developing the T3.
When they invited me down, they requested that I bring my T1.
Moog's T1 was a beat up unit and only worked 90% - they couldn't have known of the missing 10%. Mine was excellent 100% functioning condition. Now they have the missing 10%.
We heard the two T1s side by side and they preferred the sound of my unit. So we used my T1 for comparision to the T3.
The "Taurus" preset is the acid test and at first exposure to the T3, they had the sound. The sound between T1/T3 was frightenly close. And I don't use that comparision lightly as I had been trying to emulate the T1 for YEARS. Most synths I can get the throaty purr of the Taurus preset but not the low end OOMPH, or vice versa. T3 got 'em both.
T1s can sound different due to age or malfunctioning components. Capacitors can dry up or drift out of tolerance. These things are 30+ years old, caps have a 25 year life - shorter if exposed to long periods of extreme humidity or temperature. If the wrong one were to drift - for instance one of the caps in the ladder filter - then the sound changes.
I guess I was lucky to be in possession of a well-cared T1 (purchased in 2004). It obviously had never seen a stage or been stored in a damp basement or hot attic. Other T1s may not be in good condition under the hood, and people who are none the wiser are going to put their compromised T1 against a T3 and broadcast to the world that they don't sound the same. Chalk it up to error ignorance.

Re: Taurus 1 vs Taurus 3 comparison video
I just listened to that video - it's obvious that his T1 is out of calibration as the T1 filter is too dull.

MC - could you possibly do a video comparison of your T1 and T3?
(thanks in advance)

There's already one on the Moog T3 page under the video tab. It's the "Critical Listening" video and those are my T1s they're playing.

Re: Taurus 1 vs Taurus 3 comparison video
I'm thoroughly enjoying my T3. I really couldn't careless about a T1. I had a T2 years ago, got rid of it and replaced it with a Pro-One.
I require a MIDI instrument and the T1 isn't.
