midi vs cv
midi vs cv
I am curious, just got the miniature and I am reading the manual but maybe I have confused myself. If almost everything is midiable then why have cv? Does it eve differently when controlling a parameter then using midi to control the same parameter?

Re: midi vs cv
Cv is for connecting with purely a along gear. I would t connect with CV if midi was available, simply because I like remapping the CV inputs, and "pitch" and "gate" makeup for 50% of those opportunities.

Re: midi vs cv
That is where I am hung up. I am looking into a midi to cv converter but so far I haven't gotten far enough in my comparison to see if midi will do everything cv does. I don't mind remapping especially if it is for something I can not accomplish with midi alone. I just don't know enough to know if having some cv along with midi would be redundant. Thanks!

Re: midi vs cv
it's hard to say if "midi does everything CV does" because "what cv does" varies by each piece of gear. If you're specifically talking about the minitaur, then yes, midi can do all of that. The reason for having both, like i said, is to incorporate gear that isn't midi. There is also an added bonus of being able to incorporate multiple sources all feeding the minitaur. For instance, you could be sending midi notes and automations from a DAW, while you have CV coming from a sequencer that's doing other things, or synced with other gear.
I have two minitaurs and a sub 37. I use the 4-way multiplier in the CP-251 to be able to modulate all 3 filters with the same LFO. You COULD do that with midi, if you're clever, but not on the fly and with the flexibility that CV gives you.

Re: midi vs cv
Out of curiosity, why do you need a midi-to-cv converter?

i'm not sure This is what you're asking but here I go.
I use my Sub37 midi out into a modular midi to cv converter to control my small 5U modular synth or my Oberheim SEM patch panel that does not have midi.

Got it. Makes perfect sense. I thought you were trying to use a midi to cv converter to control the Minitaur.

Re: midi vs cv
jsharpphoto I was under the impression cv would give me control that midi wouldn't in the minitaur. I am quite happy to find out it doesn't! You helped a lot thanks!
Can I ask how you like working with two minitaurs? Do you layer them together for insane fat sounds or are they doing different roles?

I use them three ways:Bertotti wrote:jsharpphoto I was under the impression cv would give me control that midi wouldn't in the minitaur. I am quite happy to find out it doesn't! You helped a lot thanks!

1. Stereo bass phatness.
2. Sequenced separately as unique voices by the Beatstep Pro
3. Polychained to the sub37.

Re: midi vs cv
I am liking this Minitaur so much I was thinking of adding another but I am constantly deciding if things are to redundant do I really need it. Money gets tight so I get over protective of how I spend it. I do want a Sub37 so I am tossed up if two Minitaurs would be my direction or save and delay a sub 37 for another 4 months. 1 and 2 look like fun well 3 does also but I don't have that yet. I think first I will learn how I want to best exploit it with a Kronos. Thanks again!

Re: midi vs cv
Having two is definitely a luxury. I would get the sub 37 next, and then another Minitaur, or maybe a used slim Phatty (or little Phatty)

I have the same line of thinking, that sub37 is just to damn cool. Thanks

Re: midi vs cv
All this talk about the Minitaur has my GAS acting up again. I already have a Sub Phatty and a Sub 37. I read somewhere that the Sub's have the Minitaur's oscillator core so I'm wondering if a Minitaur will bring anything more to the table. Any thoughts?
Re: midi vs cv
Can't help much but wouldn't it be nice to have another Moog voice in there! As you can ss I am happy to enable!

I believe the Minitaur/Taurus have different filters. They sound different to me, and I think it was mentioned on here before. For me, the minitaurs are just kind of a great utility to have. Paired with another moog it can be whatever you need, at any given moment.
