Controller for Minitaur

Post by zorbas » Wed Jan 25, 2012 11:15 pm

Hi all,

Can anyone recommend a decent controller to use with the Minitaur? I'd prefer quality key feel/playability to having other features (drum pads, all that other junk that is on these things). In short, a nice set of keys without any frills...just a simple controller.

Cheers!

If you also want to control CCs for remote programming purposes or 'near' tweaking while playing (if you Minitaur is across the room in a rack), then you'll need something somewhat on the fancy side. The Novation 25SL MKII is excellent and I bought this specifically to control my Taurus III.

If you want bare bones keyboard that has really good feel and sensitivity (as to control Filer or Amplitude tied to velocity), then the old M-Audio Keystation is a good choice if you can find one.

I had an Akai MPK25 but while it had very easy to use controls and setup vs. the Novation, it was a bit on the light/cheesy feeling side of the quality scale. But alot of people like it.

If you want to use your feet to control your MiniTaur ...the new 12-STEP from Keith McMillen is small but mighty....

The Akai MPK's are decent keyboard controllers, IMHO. Easy to program and put all the relevent parameters right at your fingertips. Overall the MPK seems sturdy enough but the pads aren't the same quality as the pads on the Akai samplers. The keyboard action is a little stiff compared to a Voyager. Has a built-in arpeggiator and transport controls too.

Whatever you get, make sure it has a standard midi DIN output and not only midi over USB, as in that case you'd need a computer DAW between the keyboard controller and the Minitaur which is not ideal for easy/live use.

M-Audio makes several controllers that would fit your needs. Not the BEST action out there, but not a lot of frilly stuff on them.
