What do Moog and Beastie Boys have in common?

Post by EMwhite » Wed Sep 22, 2010 10:06 pm

For one thing, Keyboard Money Mark is in "Moog Movie" in two scenes. He's an organ player by trade and apparently his dad had some old Moog stuff back in the day that got him interested.

I posted something a while back about him and the very musical work on "Ill Communication" here: http://www.moogmusic.com/forum/viewtopi ... tie#p60762

But that's not what this post is about.

If you follow the Bboys at all, you'll know that their old DJ 'Hurricane' was swapped out for "Mix Master Mike" sometime back, the latter being talented beyond belief. Well, by now I'm turning many of you off, so will cut to the chase...

Point is, 'ave a butchers at this: http://www.sonicstate.com/news/2010/09/ ... ster-mike/ and wait for him to talk about at least two Moog products. Who knew that they actually used the Voyager, then cut the recorded bits on wax to scratch to. I didn't...

And if you are even close to being a fan, get your hands on the Criterian collection DVD and have a look at "3 MC's and 1 DJ" and the 4 camera angle version of it and be amazed. They cut that recording/video in one take with several cameras running. It's so well produced, which is to say that you can actually change cameras while watching it. Highly recommended --> http://www.amazon.com/Beastie-Boys-DVD- ... 463&sr=1-1

Ive been rapping along to Beastie Boys since I was 5! Loved their Licence to Ill back in KIndergarten!

I had a milk money envelope, and on my envelope I had all kinds of bands on it, Warrant Ratt Kiss anthrax, metallica, Whitesnake, just about all of those 80's hairbands (poison motley crue etc) Beasties anyone that I could think. Needless to say my kindergarden teacher just knew I was some kind of devil worshipper lololol (This is arkansas)

I didn't know their stuff was Moog'd out, it never really occured to me. THey used so much stuff and its ben awhile since i really listened to any of their stuff (H.H. has ben in my tape player for years on end in the car and i only listen to NPR of Jazz on the radio and rarely). I knew Mix Master Mike was a Moog artist.

Doesn't suprise me though. I was mad when Beasties and RATM cancelled their tour because one of the boys fell off his bicycle and injured his shoulder. I still have my ticket for that New Orleans Sep 2000 show. THe night before that show was to take place, I got a job at kmart, but this post is so indicative of ADHD, Ill quit now.

That was junior high for me. My initials were MCA back then, too!
I found a cassette tape of that album on the ground one day. It was all messed up--some of the tape was pulled out and tangled. I took it home and was able to fix it. :)

I remember going to Vegas in 1998 and seeing a BB poster with a Moog Modular in the background near the bathrooms at the Hard Rock Hotel. I got all geeky and tried to see if I could distinguish modules. (I'd already seen a couple Moog modulars by then.)
