Maskin,
Don't feel bad, I got my fathers 71 suitcase too. Nothing in this earth is like a Moog and a Rhodes!

Volt- I wish my partner would buy some gear to replace his game consoles instead of buying 2 360's and a huge tv screen and then relying on cracked versions of reason and an always failing computer lololol

Mr Arkadin,
WHat kind of guitar is that?
Oh, I forgot to add in my mini bio Of corse I lost a million dollars this year and I stand to lose a million dollars next year. At this rate Ill lose all my money.............in 60 years.
I have an atari 400 with the Music Composer cartridge that I haven't tried to mess with in a long time.

Kevin,
you forgot to mention that you ate lunch with the god forsaken C.N. (*I didn't say it, please noone else lol) and the room didn't explode. Your reputation preceedes you.

Gam,
Man I know that when you get that guitar youll post all kinds of pictures (Standing in front of a fan....hair blowing, biting lower lip, etc) lolol like that guy MootBooxle did when he got that synthesizer.com 22 space synth cabinet and took pictures that they call "Synth porn" lololol I wish I had some dough to drop on one ofd them suckers because Im totally lacking a decent guitar. I got the ovation celebrity deluxe and its crapola I remember that clapton synth story lolol.

Magnet,
Id like to hear some of the stuff youre doing. Man my wife is always making jokes about Moog, saying the name wrong on purpose MOOOOOOG always making jokes like the Voyager is missing and stuff like that lol. But the other day for the first time she was messing with the filter cutoff and stuff hehee it was cool.

Thanks for the replies!

Mid '30s

Toronto born'n'bred

Got hooked on electronic music in '83 when I heard Depeche Mode for the first time.

My first synth was a Korg DW-6000. Brilliant for learning the basics on, I would recommend it to anyone who wants a cheap, good sounding and very untrendy synthesizer. Had that for about two years until I took the leap and started investing in new gear.

My first Moog was a Source. Bought that one around '91 and paid $325 for it. Sold it a few years later when I used it as part of a trade in against a Korg Prophecy. Even though the shop gave me $400 in credit for the Source it was, in the end, a poor trade. Come to think of it, the Source was the only synth I really, truly regret selling (and I've owned quite a few over the years - including a $5,000 ModCan system).

Anyway, by 2002 I'd just become so disenchanted with having a room full of gear and no time or inclination to play that I sold the whole lot. Used the proceeds to buy a car. Didn't touch a keyboard for four or five years.

Last year I was reading up on how Moog had brought out the Little Phatty. Went to the local music store, played one, loved one, bought one. It takes me back to that Source, except it does all the stuff the Source never did, like PWM, filter FM, etc.

Now I only have three synths and have made a promise to myself to limit it to that number. If one comes in, one goes out.

;) Orson at his best.

The guitar is a Fernandes Dave Kushner Signature Ravelle with a Sustainer pickup - which is the nearest i'll be getting to a Moog Guitar until some 'standard' (ie. cheaper) models come out.

Hello,

Nice to meet you folks!

My name is Martin. I've played electronic music since I was 15 or so. That's about 20 years ago, so I'll be kind of 39ish for the next couple of years.

I'm a translator by trade, and when I'm not messing with nouns, verbs, adjectives and ridiculous marketing neologisms, I play non-ridiculous, non-marketing, non-neologistic music. These days that's either with my Moog Prodigy and its surrounding peripherals, or my other love, the Finnish Kantele.
I also like cross-country skiing (but that's never gonna happen where I live at the moment), bagels, and the Moomins.

:)

Christopher Winkels,
Only 3 synths? Ill bet soon those will all be Moog synths lol. Something will happen that will lead you to break that promise hehe. LIke if Moog makes a polyphonic synth.

Suddenly I envision a highly disillusioned Carelton Heston pounding on the sand proclaiming

"Damn you to hell, Chuck Norris"

Good thinking! I think I can turn up the nerd factor up a notch...

In German, the word "Nase" literally means "nose" - but it also means "guy" or "person".

For example, when booking a hotel for two people you can calculate the cost of the stay "pro Nacht und Nase" (per night and nose [i. e., one person = one "nose"]).

So "moognase" just means "moog guy". In some contexts it can also mean "fan" or "geek". It's a very flexible concept.

I'm 50 (man, I envy you younger folks) and live in the 'burbs just north of Chicago.

I first got poleaxed by the sounds of a Moog (and synths generally) in the early 70s. I was a big prog-rock fan. At that time I also got very into avant-garde classical music, including its electronic offshoots on albums by Morton Subotnick, Iannis Xenakis and "Time's Encomium" by Charles Wuorinen. I went to music school and studied classical piano. I wanted a moog or an ARP in the worst way but they were so ridiculously beyond my miserable teenage savings that I could only dream about it. Which I proceeded to do.

In college I drifted away from playing music and towards creative writing. After college I spent 15 years writing fiction. I also became a free lance writer and among other things spent almost 10 years contributing music journalism to publications like the Chicago Tribune and Chicago Reader. I'm currently (and strangely) a marketing writer for a big corporation.

I took up piano playing again in the mid-90s. Then, 5 years ago, I inexplicably (mid-life crisis?) got the itch to buy a Model D or a Mellotron. At that time I was utterly stunned to find out that Moog was back in business and Mellotrons were being made again. It was a rather "back to the future" moment.

Four years ago I bought a Voyager. I figured the odds were 50-50 that within 6 months the novelty would wear off, and I'd have a really expensive knick-knack to dust. After 6 months - when I still couldn't wait to get home from work to see what sounds I could pull out of the thing - I realized I was re-connecting with playing music in a big way.

I've since bought a refurbished ARP 2600, Mellotron Mk VI, Mobius sequencer and Hammond XK-3 system. I've also been playing regularly in bands for the past three years. I'm currently saving for home recording/video gear to start documenting things.

Strange how things work out. Sometimes...very strange.

Rick

P.S. I check into these forums almost every day and while I don't post often, I do enjoy the tips, tales and tirades. Keep 'em coming.

Rico1980 -you envy us younger guys, but I envy you. You got to witness a lot music and events first hand, where as im just beging to scratch the surface of the roots of my interests and obsessions

Moognase- im actually glad your name was brought up. When I first saw it I thought "Moog + Mayonase = Moognase" lol. But Moog guy makes a lot more sense

Oh man now ill bet that that ARP Mellotron combo is freaking fantastic.

I just love hearing the stories about what kind of gear people got and stuff.

I know a few people who would sell their souls just to take a 2500 to Devils Tower and belt out about 5 notes over and over again lolololol.
