arp odyssey + prophet 5 for $400...
today i bought an arp odyssey(model 1210) and a prophet 5(rev 2) for $200 each!
they both needed a serious cleaning, lot's of dirty pots and connections, but both fired up and put out sound. the prophet sounded especially sweet.
they're at my tech's now getting cleaned up. are there anythings i should be looking for that would be a sure sign these keyboards are broken beyond repair? or is just the fact that they play notes a good sign?

this nice old man was retiring and moving to arizona and was selling off everything he owned.
he posted the arp on craigslist and when i went to check it out he was like, "oh, i also have this prophet 5". he kept going off about the arp, as i toyed with the prophet... i don't think he knew what he had.
i just hope they clean up well.

Do you think you took advantage of him?[/quote]
it occurred to me at first, but then i remembered the time i bought a minimoog for $1000... i was so excited by the price i bought it without checking the whole thing out completely. there ended up being so much wrong with it it would have cost more than i could've afforded to fix it... i ended up selling it for less than i bought it for.
i know very little about these two synths... other than the fact that the prophet is sought after i didn't know what to check to see if it functioned properly... i had about 5 minutes to play around with them as his wife watched soap operas in the livingroom with me. he didn't want money, he wanted them gone. i offered $400 for both and he took it without a 2nd thought... makes me think he would have taken a lot less. but for all i knew i was giving him $400 for two broken synths.

I don't know anything about Hammonds, but someone I know who is moving offered me his Hammond M101. He going to leave it in the apartment otherwise. It turns on, but doesn't really play. It's in pretty nice cosmetic condition though, just a little dirty.OysterRock wrote:Everone gets at least one find like that in their life.
I once got a Hammond A100 for free and a Hammond C3 for $100.
Is this organ worth much.? I was thinking of taking it and trying to repair it myself.
PS- back in '92, I bought a perfectly functioning MG-1 and MicroMoog at a pawn shop for $90 total. I thought the days of these kind of finds were long over... wonders never cease!
PPS- Keith, you are so lucky! The Arp Odyssey is my favorite synth ever besides a MiniMoog. It is probably the most inclusive and complete mono synth ever built; It does everything! It's kind of like having a Prodigy and CP251 in one box, and then some. Plus, it just has the best sound.

I dunno, those Commodore 64 SID chips still sound pretty sweet.electrical_engineer_gEEk wrote:True True....
and hey, if Vintage Synths never made a "comeback" in the industry those two synths would probably be as worthless as a 1980s computer.......
imagine that!

eric,
yeah, this was my first time seeing an odyssey up close and i was amazed at how much it could do... sample and hold, noise, ring mod, etc etc... i always thought the odyssey was like the arp version of a prodigy, but it's clearly a lot more than that.
i'm anxious to get them back from the shop.

I used to have an M-111 which I think is the same organ in a different style cabinet. Its not worth much (maybe $50?), but its still a fun organ. I don't know if it would be worth investing much money or time into, but might be fun to tinker with. It won't sound like a B3, but they do sound pretty good.I don't know anything about Hammonds, but someone I know who is moving offered me his Hammond M101. Just be careful, those old organs are high voltage. Don't touch anything inside unless you know what you're doing. They'll fry you in a second, even if its unplugged.

Re: arp odyssey + prophet 5 for $400...
The Arp, in good condition, is worth about $580. There are a few different models of the Prophet 5, and some are considered of greater value than others. However on average, a Pro5 in good condition is worth about $1,250.00
I'd say you turned a good deal.
