prices of The Source

Post by gd » Mon Mar 20, 2006 8:03 pm

Have you noticed the increase in the price of these over the past 6 months? They seem to be in the $1200 range now for ones in excellent condition. At these prices I may put mine up and fully restore my Mini D and pick up some moogers.

Seems like once the word was out that it sounds like a minimoog...everyone decided to buy it.

i got mine for 700 about a month ago and its in top shape, but i have seen most of them going up. i doubt this has any substance, but I heard a rumor sources would be around 1500-2000 in a year or 2. i forget exactly how many sources were made

I got a super nice condition source about 4 years ago for $475. It is a shame how these things go up in value as they get even older and more unstable. People hear the name Moog and flip out. You don't need to pay $1200 for a 20+ year old synth when you could save a little more money and buy a new one. You'll get service and a warranty and something that is new. The Source is a great synth but limited compared to what we have today. I'd never pay more than $500 for a Source.

"Oh that thing" "I had nothing to
do with that. "as said to me by

When asked to sign my xeroxed moog source users manual. Then signed it.

I think the new Moog will generate even more interest in The Source with the comparison btn the two.

i dont think i'll ever sell my Source. it really is a unique moog and it sounds so good. i got it for $700, which is a price I'm sure I'll never see again. i've even modded it a little (reversed the note-priority, and am working on adding an expression pedal to control to the pitch wheel (+5) for those sweet sync-off freq. squeals via feet). the Source is really my favorite moog... glad to hear the new Moog "***" is based on a similar design.

this source went last night for just under $700. a good price even if it has one ugly key. worth the discount in my opinion.

ehh yeah but overall it looked pretty dirty which probably means it wasn't cared for very well. i'd rather pay a few hundred more for a unit that has been really well cared for

i doubt it.

why pay so much for a source when you could get this new synth for only a little more which it will be:
more reliable, with warrenty
more stable, with the voyagers ultra stable VCOs
more knobs, with LEDs

but the source does have a much cooler name so....

The source has great looks, great name, and great sound, but that single knob just turns me right off. At least "The Little Phatty" has one knob per module.

ya know... i never really noticed that the square wave was adjustable on the source, until i noticed the square waves' "quality" knob on the Sonic Six and then I quickly realized that this was likely also an option on my Source. I never really noticed the special color-coding on the source. (all yellow buttons are tweakable with the knob... duh!) So anyway, my source just got even cooler. weeeeeeee

2 more just sold this week for $1k US so their prices are holding. I just sold off another kbd to pair my home studio down and will clear out more of my main studio later this year. The Boss (my wife) told me that I still need to free up more room and $ in order to buy any new gear. Well the Voyager, Mini D will definately stay as far as Moogs are concerned but my Source maybe forced to the trading block at some point. Just sold some of my old Juno's, Obies that just were no longer getting any useage and all the Emu gear is now gone as well. I cannot see the new LP making its way into my studio as I'd rather keep the Source.
