Almost everything electronic these days is made in China, and not everything is bad. There are things made there that are of excellent quality. The Moog Little Phatty for one. Yes yes, I know, it's assembled in Asheville USA, but the printed circuit boards are populated and produced in China to keep the cost down, as is probably the case with the Sub 37, Sub Phatty, and Minitaur.

And as I wrote before, it's pretty hard to buy something electronic that isn't made, or partly made in China these days. The Mac Mini Aluminum on which this comment was written was made in China, and after 4 years, it's still going strong.

If the quality requirements of the company that order products produced over there are high enough and thoroughly followed, I don't see a problem.

Does anybody know how many new Moogs, Korgs, DSIs etc.went back either immediatly or laterly after the purchase for fixing ? - NO.
Would anybody of the customers tell the world how quickly and how often after the purchase sent his gear back for fixing ? - NO.
Would Moog, Korg, DSI, etc. ever publish any statistics about the "went back" instruments for fixing and tell the reason why ? - NO.
Does all the world know what is happening in China every day ? - YES.

I do not necessarily approve of what is going on in China. I'm merely stating the fact that capitalism has shifted the production of electronics to that country solely for the purpose of making more profits.

As for how many Moog synths were sent back for repairs under warranty, we'll certainly never know that. Heck, we don't even know exactly how many were produced, even for limited run ones (Voyager Old School comes to mind) !!

I was under the impression that it is mostly the boards that are made in China. That said I can't believe some of the hardware like jacks and knobs are not made there as well.

I do remember seeing some video on you tube where Dave smiths says something to the affect of DSI has bought this new latest and greatest board propagating machine (if i'm remembering correctly). And D.S. does boast that his stuff is proudly made ...

Yes, fortunately there are still companies that produce all their stuff locally (Electro-Harmonix based in New York is one). But inevitably, labor costs will be higher here in America then overseas.
And, as I said, the quality control is most of the time on par with what could be made locally for more money.

Moog Music DOES assemble, calibrate, burn-in, and perform quality checks before shipping of their synths in house. They only outsource some things, and not always as far as China. Sometimes it's down the street for some of their wood work (at least they used to...).

Physically speaking, Moog Inc. Asheville is a very small place. Sonically, of course they are wow so huge.

China is starting to lose the edge as their costs are rising. Not just due to labor. Not as cheap as it used to be.

Sorry if this was covered in another thread....

Just got an email from Humbucker Music as part of their "Moog Club" that stated:

"Huge News Coming Monday! Keep an eye on your Inbox Monday, January 19th for some of the BIGGEST NEWS in MOOG HISTORY!"

Wonder what it could be...?

[quote="wordsdrawnigh"]Have y'all seen this?

Sure sounds like a new Minimoog, paraphonic at least, polyphonic perhaps. After the Sub 37 they really have to do a new Minimoog.

Since the "announcement" is from a music retailer, they may be greatly reducing prices on existing Moog gear to reduce inventories. BTW maybe Arturia will be offering a poly Brute at NAMM? See Nick Batt's hunch at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=20wpPoegydM, goto 1:01:59.

They're just going to announce that from now on, all their products will be digital... none of this analog nonsense.

It's going to be modular synths and more than one. More info might leak between now and Monday, but that's all I'm going to comment on. Should be a good day for Moog enthusiasts.
