MonoSynth String Sounds

Post by aqua » Sat Sep 20, 2014 2:03 pm

Hello,

I'm looking to re-create some pretty convincing string sounds by multitracking my moog mono. Any tips? Shooting for something lush and Korg Lambda-esque.

Also, any tips on how to re-create a chorus or ensemble effect with just standard monosynth components? Detuning the oscillators slightly gives be something somewhat similar, but maybe you can help?

Hi aqua,

Modulating the Pulse Width of the oscillators has always been an important part of the '70s string machine sound. It's done via OSC 1 WAVE, OSC WAVE 2, or BOTH as the DEST choice found in both MOD 1 and MOD 2. Try a TRI wave as the MOD SOURCE.

Almost all examples of the string machine sound rely heavily on the use of separate chorus and/or phase effects (either inside or outside of the keyboard product). Three of these effects running together give you that ensemble sound.

Here's a link to a single rackspace effect designed to do exactly this:

Listen as he adjusts three modulated delay lines to create the desired ensemble effect:

Cool, that sounds very good and seems like a rack mount version of the COTK C1670 Ensemble Generator:

Here's an old demo I did:

And here is a video where I used a 4 voice polyphonic modular patch to create the strings. With the C1670 at least it works best with very narrow pulse waves so maybe that might be something to try with your mono synth:
