ELP's Abaddon's Bolero - our 'intro' track

Post by noddyspuncture » Fri Dec 27, 2013 8:20 am

My ELP tribute band - Noddy's Puncture - will be using an "intro tape" when we go out live. The idea was to use the actual track "Abaddon's Bolero" and then cut the tape and kick in as a band to finish the track...! So, with Mr Emerson's permission we're going to do it.
I was curious as to how it would sound... so these past couple of weeks we set about recording the last minute and a half. Now we - the band members, are scattered all around the UK. So Steve, the drummer, recorded the drums one day in his rehearsal room. Ed, the bassist, then downloaded it and added his bass and then sent his mix it to me. Yesterday I added the Moog and some choir. I then attached it to the end of the Orchestra recording from ELP's 'Works Live' album - which we'll be using as the intro tape (with Emo's permission of course) basically replacing the part where ELP themselves kick in to finish the track...!

Yes, that sounds great - bloody brilliant in fact.

It's good to know Keith Emerson has been supportive. He seems a very open and responsive guy - his support for Rachel Flowers was good to see as well when he let her play his Moog modular not long ago.

Please post here when you're playing gigs again. I live in Britain and I'd appreciate seeing you

Thanks guys...

Sweep, where abouts are you in the UK?
We have a few gigs in already later next year. We have a couple north East, Newcastle way... one in Cardiff and Birmingham and also one in Leicester. The first one though will hopefully be near Manchester.

Cheers,
TOM

I'm near Manchester, so that first gig sounds a good option. But I tend to move around at times, so I may also catch up with you somewhere else.

Hi Noddy,

Yeh man, that's really great !! I am near Liverpool so might be interested in coming to you Manchester date.

I love ELP and the Bolero is very underated. Its a brilliant piece of music with Emo layering up all the Moogs etc.

I wrote to Emo a few times as I transcribed/arranged/recorded to ELP stuff but he never replied to any of my messages. So you did well to get a response.

Hi Paul,

I've been in contact with Emo since the mid 80's. He's even loaned my Hammond L100 a few times. Playing in the ELP tribute, I've always run any ideas using their music (actual recordings) past him. I used a sample of the "Hoedown" patch before - but don't need that any more, with my Modular... :D And he's always been positive about it.

He's a really great bloke - who appreciates my band "keeping the flag flying"... as he calls it.

You can get our gig dates from our website: http://www.noddyspuncture.co.uk

The Manchester one (actually Rochdale) is still to be confirmed.

Cheers,
Tom

Thanks for that. I won't be at the Rochdale gig if it happens, but I'll keep a check on your website and find a suitable gig (or two or three) at some point.

Hi Tom,

That's very good that Emo replied and I saw you photo with him.

I spent a long time transcribing the first 4 x bars of HOEDOWN because I just could not get the exact timing of where the portamento upper/lower key notes were landing (beat-wise). In the end I got it as close as I could and then scored it out so that it was readable/playable. Anyway I sequenced/recorded a version but its still sat in the studio waiting to be mixed down. I wrote my own Ending for it because the Live version fades-out. I did like a JS Bach diminished-scale thing that I think would have really suited Emo's playing and chops.

Does he live in America now and has tendonitis (I heard) ??

Is the top synth in your TY video a MiniMoog ??

Paul

Hi Paul,

Emo actually once wrote out the full Hoedown riff for me complete with the fingering he used...I was pestering him for it though... :D
He lives in the USA yes... and yes, he's had problems with his right hand for a good while now, but it doesn't stop him playing.

I have indeed built one of my Minimoogs into the Modular. It's the Mini I've used live since the early 80's and has been very reliable... so the idea is that, should I have problems with those 901's - I can switch over to the Mini...! That's yet to be tested in anger though.... hehe.

Cheers,
Tom
