Hirlostek: Self Powered Noise Cable for Phattys and Minitaur

Post by haiku-ish » Wed Jun 19, 2013 9:37 am

Hi There, after spending some years one my LP TE, i had the chance to update to a Voyager.
I liked the sound of the Phatty but sometimes because the lack of audio noise Osc i couldn't make the sounds i wanted to make (ie Percussion, windy drones...).

So i came up with an idea : there is 5v available on the jack on the sides of the phatty so it could be possible to make a little circuit who can provide noise to the audio input or use as a second modulation source (LP TE has only one modulation source).

i made some test and the cable was working fine on my voyager, adding another source of audio/modulation.
it can works with moogerfooger too, and other synths and modules that have expression pedal jacks.

here is the cable :
it will be available to buy in early july, and for those who are into DIY, i will provide schematic too.

Cheers !

and how it works :

Very nice idea. Any built in attenuation?

Thanks !

not on this model,
but if i see there is some demand, i'll built some more with different cables (ie different noises type and perhaps attenuation...)

I´m trying this on the Sub Phatty right now. It works when you stick it into Filter CV and Pitch CV, but not from the suggested Volume CV jack?

Hi !
This is strange, but i've tested it only with my voyager, but it "should" work ok with vol input cv on your synth....

Just a small question: since this is a digital noise created by a PIC, what is the length of the noise loop (in seconds, or minutes, or better yet hours ) ?

You see, I'm very reluctant towards digital white noise sources since the dreaded MM5837 (under one second audible loop) of the eighties and the very badly implemented white noise of my Alesis Ion, and the 2.5 seconds audible looping digital one in my MFB Kraftzwerg.

Thanks.

Hi,
as far as i know, it is a random generated noise, no loop.
here is the source, and more infos : http://www.electricdruid.net/index.php? ... s.noisegen

quote from Tom (electric druid) :
The noise generator 12F675 PIC microprocessor uses a dual LFSR algorithm which produces a pseudo-random stream of bits at over 90KHz. The bitstream shouldn't repeat for 142 million years, but obviously I haven't checked!

"The bitstream shouldn't repeat for 142 million years..."

That's certainly good enough for me !

Thanks for a quick reply.
