McS Moog

Post by j0kErSc » Fri Jul 29, 2005 1:31 am

Hey everyone. I'm relatively new to the whole synth thing, and I thought I'd seen and heard every kind of keyboard there was. One day i was listening to Motion City Soundtrack, and i heard a very distinguishable synth sound. I, later, came to realize what I was hearing was a moog. Though that was about a year ago, before I was deep into synths, I'm now interested in buying the moog Jesse Johnson from McS uses, but I can't find out which model he has or where to get that information. So, if any of you can help me that'd be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
i am the movie..

From the photos on their web site (http://www.motioncitysoundtrack.com/photos.php) it looks like a Concertmate MG-1. They are still pretty easy to find up on eBay.

You can go to http://www.vintagesynth.com and check out the specs for it.

yes sir, its a moog/realistic mg-1 (i have one too). ebay is littered with them as of semi-lately. you can probably snag an MG-1 for $325-$425 on ebay. It's a fun keyboard (the lowest-end "moog sound" you can get)... makes some really cool/nice sounds, but in my opinion, it's considerably 'thinner' sounding than any other moog out there. I find it to be not THAT versatile either. It's definately got a "tone" that you can't stray too far from.

Yeah, the Concertmate MG-1 is his main deck, but he also uses a Concertmate 500, which appears to be a Casio SK-1 knock off. However I couldn't tell what songs he uses the latter on.

I wouldn't say it's thinner than *any* moog out there considering there are some 1 VCO Moogs out there (the Satellite for instance and arguably the Micromoog). Most people would put the MG-1 somewhere in the same class as the Rogue. Certainly not exactly the same in many detailed respects but it's in the ballpark and of the same era. The organ sound (in addition to the regular VCOs) on the MG-1 won't fool people into thinking you have a real polysynth but it's fun to have.

It's unlikely anyone will confuse the MG-1 for some of the Casio designed Concertmate keyboards Radio Shack retailed unless someone is intentionally setting you up. But it is worthwhile pointing out that Concertmate was what they called many keyboards, so it's good to be specific and call it the MG-1. Casios are not known for their Moog-like sounds and vice versa.
