Hi folks,

I have been working on 'FM Synthesis' over the past year with respect to the Yamaha DX7 and DX21 Synthesizers (which I was fortunate enough to purchase at sensible prices in eBay last spring). Though there is still so much much I have yet to learn about these amazing instruments. And so much I absolutely LOVE about them!

For anyone who may be interested in this topic, here is a link to my You-Tube channel in which the first 70 (or so) x demonstrations uploaded are with either the DX21 or DX7 :-

http://www.youtube.com/user/monsterjazzlicks/videos

"Flow" thru "Bad Chiming".

I have set up my Mini and Multi Moog's earlier this week and plan to start jamming something out on them in the near future. Beforehand though, I do have some (MOOG) questions which I will post under a separate thread.

Thanks very much indeed.

Best,

Paul David Seaman

However, I wanted to share [on here] some of my self-creations and was not exactly sure where would be best to post this. Monster,

Tony's bank #4 is great. very much like something I would hear in the original tron movie. flow, felt more like a vignette... needs a sick drum beat... has the beginnings of the kind of music washed out would write.

here's to the next Brian Eno!

The "Tony's Bank[s]" were a bit of a personal breakthrough for me cheers.

Was a "DX7" used in the original "TRON" movie would you know?

Not sure how/what type of drum-beat you had in mind? As you will have heard, the "TB" demonstrations are all rubato.

Is "Washed Out" a band please?

Best,

Paul

Not sure what the 3 x notes are of the ' pick up' into the MIDDLE8 @ 0:48. They sound unrelated to the sustained chord. Although it actually sounds OK because it adds to the quirkiness of the whole thing! :o

Thanks Paul. Yes indeed. But it seemed to me that the original work was like that (only one note of the harmony of two notes in that melody is related to the chord playing in the background at that particular moment). But maybe my ear is not as sharp as yours (cover done by ear only). And that cover was done purely for the fun of it, there may be some mistakes in there (especially the train crash ending ! lol)

BTW, even if I don't necessarily share your enthusiasm for the Yamaha DX series of synths (too cold and metallic for my own personal taste), I admire your extensive work of demoing those machines on YT and SC !
Top notch !

Cheers man for taking the time to have a quick listen.

Quite a lot of work went into learning and understanding the beginnings of FM Synthesis. I think the DX's are great synth's but I can still appreciate how/why they are not to everybody's liking. They have their own distinctive sound of which many people rejected as an alternative to Analogue in the early 80's.

Paul

Thanks a lot man. I spent a good few hours banging out those patches! lol I was nearly passing out as I was trying to get them all uploaded! Its a bloody mission and a half.

Yes, beating/detuning FX is a main feature on patch 'Flow' (DX21) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uwYVo--ttTo

My personal fav's are 'Zawi Bass' (DX7) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x161lMaeZ1k

and 'Shapes' (DX21) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C4Xi-KguEnI

Another small cover of a song from 1982 called Eyes Of Stranger by the Payolas.
Done entirely on electronic instruments (even the bass guitar coming from the DR-880). With the Minimoog D, Ensoniq SQ-80, Alesis Ion, DR-880 (custom CR-78 kit + bass guitar), EHX Cathedral reverb, Boss DD-7 (in stereo slap-back analog mode).

Enjoy, and comment if you like. :D

Since you asked for feedback I have two things I thought I would mention.
-Very little cutoff tweaking..!? Im voting for more tweaking!
-Do you have any deep low end in your bassline(mix)? Im listening on crappy speakers, so it might be the speakers, but I thought it was lacking some low end in the bass department..(?) Doesn't effect the song anyway, so who really cares.
Great stuff!!

Hey Rabalder! I've just seen your feedback. Thanks for taking the time of writing it down.
Usually I try not to justify anything, but this may be interesting this time.

- Very litle tweaking... indeed: we're a duo: my mate plays guitar and sing, I play basslines with my left hand, harmonies etc with my right hand, and sing. Not to mention the fredastairing on the pedalboards haha. So there is de facto very few free hands in there for tweaking!
- About the low end... we started this mix like three times. Everytime, the bass + kick part was quite deep at the start, but going through the guitars, vocals and boards, the low end was kind of wasting the 60's vibe of the song. So we decided to erode it a bit and to accentuate more middy frequencies.

Again, thanks for listening, very apreciated.

from the beck song reader. the first has about 26 tracks of voyager (one per note) for a polyphonic phase organ sound. the second has thee tracks of different voices. the third just the bass.
