RA moog minimoog
For $3250? I thought it would be worth more, even in this one's condition.

Thats a steal right there, i tought it would go for a bit more this one.
Arent these built with the same components as the ra modulars.

Yeah, I thought so. I screwed up not bidding. Restored it probably would fetch twice that.

I would be more concerned about the sound, does yours sound that much better than a later model D? I'm not sure it could sound that much better, my 12xxx sounds killer.

Re: RA moog minimoog
Cant say if its better or not, i never had the chance to test a late model.
I had two mini's before that i had to sell, one with ra boards and one around the 336x.
For my opinion i found the ra to be best for me, still thast my choise. So when one came up for sale and i grabbed it .
I do also want a later model mini at one point offcourse.....

Same circuits - no
Gear list: '04 Saturn Ion, John Deere X300 tractor, ganged set of seven reel mowers for 3 acres of lawn, herd of sheep for backup lawn mowers, two tiger cats for mouse population control Oh you meant MUSIC gear Oops I hit the 255 character limi

Re: RA moog minimoog
MC is welcome to add to this, but I can rifle off some changes thru the years....
Early Minis-
Hotter signal into VCF, lower signal out (More intermodulation distortion usually.)
Less power supply filtering
Less temperature compensation on VCOs
All pots are AB mil-spec types with metal shafts (later ones had some open type pots w/ nylon shafts)
Panels are usually metal
Keyboard driving circuitry and noise circuitry slightly different
Carbon resistors of a type more prone to drift over the years
Switches sometimes only have one set of contacts. (later ones usually DPDT with double contacts wired.)
Wood usually a higher quality, however thinner
No 120/240 AC switch
No grounded plug
No buffer board resulting in interactive octave range switching and increased VCO drift
Very late Minis even have gold plated connections in some places.
There's all kinds of differences between revs and serials of Minis.
They are not all the same.
One thing true of all Minis- early, middle and later- is that their transistors are matched in their filters and the filter design was basically the same.
Almost every other circuit had very small changes made over the years.
Nothing huge, but they all add to being different instruments, especially when comparing very early to very late models.
I could probably list another 20 differences if I thought about it...

I also remember you mentioning the older ones had a VCA glitch that gave it an extra punch.

As far as I can tell, they all do. Both envs too.LaxSlash1993 wrote:I also remember you mentioning the older ones had a VCA glitch that gave it an extra punch.
One resistor in each env is just "wrong" if they were trying to make a proper envelope.
As it is, the attack portion overshoots the maximum sustain setting.
I have a feeling it was an error and not intentional as it's occurs on both envs.
I never "fix" the VCA env, but often do with the VCF env because once you notice it, it can be annoying.
Btw, I recently discovered that at least one very early Minimoog had a board that came with an adjustment for keyboard scaling.
I've never seen any other Minimoog with this adjustment present, but it appears to be stock on this particular board below.
MC, have you ever seen anything like this before? Does your RA Mini have it?

Re: RA moog minimoog
Yup, my RA has that trimpot. It was superfluous and another element that added drift so I shorted it out long ago. After a recal, it's been fine.Kevin Lightner wrote:Btw, I recently discovered that at least one very early Minimoog had a board that came with an adjustment for keyboard scaling.
