Which MoogerFooger?

As I ponder the fruits of my labor, as I rejoyce at the coming of my annual pennance (income tax) I beg the question…

Which MoogerFoogers.

Ive already decided that Im going to get the Delay and the Cp251, and I hope to get the grammy rebate (Nudge Nudge Moog) I wonder how you guys feel about the phaser and the Murf.

With the Murf, it seems like every demo from everywhere sounds exactly the same. Id really like to hear something new and great that tells me why i should consider it.

Im also thinking about the phaser but I see so much limited use for it and it sounds so similar to the ring mod in its faster applications. Id like a great demo of this too and im going to search the tube.

THe freqbox sounds really really neat but I just don’t know.

WHat do you guys think of the Foogers.

Im not really the least bit interested in the 101 because ill just get a regular VCLPF later.

Im asking because im going to have the 2 im going to get rackmounted and there will be a hole where a third MF will fit.

Thanks!

Eric

I agree with you on the MuRF - I kept hearing the same thing coming out of them. Reminded me of the Korg Wavestation sound - once you know the sound you can pick it out anywhere. However, one thing I’ve learned is that the more Moogerfoogers you have the more possibilities you have to make them sound different from what they are on their own. My guess is that this also applies to the MuRF.

I started out with the RingMod, then the FreqBox, then the LPF. I primarily use the RingMod in the mixer out/filter in loop for tremelo-type effects or to add a bit of bite to the top of some lead sounds. The FB and LPF are more often than not used with my bass. I run the bass through the FB first to get a little growl and then into the LPF to make it fit the track.

The sky is the limit really when you feel like plugging things into other things. The Moogerfoogers are great at becoming more than the sum of their parts as they meet one another.

Hope this helps.

Although I like the FB for the bit of fuzz it gives my bass - a true Moogerfooger super-warm fuzz tuned for bass would be purchased in a second!

I use the Ring Mod primarily because the tremelo pot on the Rhodes no longer works. Once I heard the 102 with an electric piano I knew I had to get it. Once I got it I also use it a lot with the theremin, and Ive even used it with a drum machine. Lately Ive been trying to get the carrier osc to track with my Micro but it won’t scale properly until I can attenuate the output from the Micro. I have been using it anyway though, and it really fattens up the single Osc sound so far when used with the FILTER IN.

Im going to use the Delay probably a lot more than the 102, for vocals and Saxaphone and whatever else. Im really interested in the VC capabillity.

I was really considering a freqbox but I think before I buy another MFr Im going to have to play one first. I think that the Murf woudl do some really cool stuff. I watched some gearwire demos on youtube after posting the thread.

Im in Arkansas, and I don’t think that theres too many people that really know about Moog here, are willing to pay for it, and would live anywhere near me. My friend bought a Freq but he blew it up so I haven’t gotten the opportunity to ever hook 2 MFRs together or even hear a second one in person.

I guess that Ill just get the cp and the delay and then since im going to rack them then there will just be a hole where a future MFR will go until they come up with something new maybe.

Ill just buy some modules in the meantime, because Im building a modular but the MoogerFoogers are a huge part of that system.

Thanks for the input!

When I found out about MoogerFoogers, I ended up buying the LP that same instant. It is very useful for my applications. Much of what I do is based on the envelope out CV, used to control the other MFRs. I play guitar and drums.

So if you don’t have a need for the MF-101, but do have a need for an envelope CV, then you would need the FB. I personally played with the FB for 1 week with guitar, and found that it is very much a one hit wonder, but still useful in some respects, and sounds great for what it is. In the end I decided that is is not for me because of its limitations, and its seemingly in ability to get mellow. Another note here is that the Envelope CV is only active when the FB effect is on.

I also considered the MuRF. I really like the effect, but again I too think that it is a bit of a one trick pony. Using the CP-251 and the LPF or Phaser can yeild some extremely similar FX, plus you get their standard sounds too.

Overall I went for best bang for the buck. I own a 101, 102, 103, 104, 251. Together I can get many similar FX to the FB and MuRF, and definitely do not regret spending the money on these, and NOT the other two. These all work together really well, and have lots of CV control both TO and FROM, the FB and MuRF were lacking some CV inputs/outputs that I really expected them to have, and I felt that they are limited by that fact.

My suggestion is to go with the Phaser, its extremely versatile. The stereo effect is to die for with or without the Delay. In the FX loop of the Delay the Phaser sounds really neat too… you can get a neat filter sound out of it, and can use the 251 to make it do some neat tricks.

In the end use your ears, and be patient… May I suggest a road trip, you could always travel to Canada, and go to http://moogaudio.com to try them all.

Man thats a good idea hehe.

WHat im going to do eventually though is since im building a modular, im going to get an Envelope Follower module. That is the circuit that the 101 and the Freq Box has that takes the amplitude and converts that to a voltage.

I think that Im going to just wait until I get some money and wait and see what else Moog has in store for the MoogerFooger lines, but Im sort of interested in the Phaser though.

Man the tangled web we weave when with Moog we do believe.

Man those Moogaudio prices are ridiculous!
3600 for a Performer Edition?

Jeez!

I agree that the FB can seem one-trick - and when you keep hearing that dive bomb oscillator sound out of it in every demo that doesn’t help it’s reputation. However, playing a bass through it (or probably guitar) just enough to get some grit is awesome. I use hard sync, tune to taste, turn up FM and turn the envelope off. I then run it through the LPF to warm it up a bit - has a great sound. There are a few demos on my earsmack.com page below with bass…

When I was considering my next MF (before the FB) I was thinking phaser and delay but opted for Electro-Harmonix units. I think I will eventually get the MF delay but the Deluxe Memory Man (original mono) and the new Stereo with Hazarai both sound really nice. I run my Voyager in mono and run it through the DMM and it sounds amazing. Sample of that too on the web site. I also picked up a nano small stone phaser and although it’s limited and no CV it has a nice sound overall. I just wish the MF delay was a little cheaper…

Well I also have the electro Harmonix BassBalls pedal, and it works really well with the theremin too.

Man all the moog effects are great, its just figureing out which one hehe.

Yes Moog Audio’s price’s are pretty high, but they are in CAD before our dollar caught up to the US… Most of their prices in store are good, and I have a buddy that works there, so I get deals all the time… I’ve never paid even e-bay prices for a new moogerfooger, so that helps a bunch.

I too opted for EH at first… but after a year of using the polyphase and so many of their other products, I just had it, sold them all, and bought Moog. I can’t stand EH, they do not support their product at all, and they do everything different, just to be different - not to do something better. IMO they are a money grabbing, sucker bait corporation, riding on the coat tails of their past. With that said I do still own a HOG and bassballs, but only because Moog doesn’t and probably won’t make anything like them.

Once I committed to Moog I decided that I would own them all one day… My best advice is to get out and listen to them in person to decide what you want… Or collect them in number order!!!
