Which FX add to the SubPhatty ?

Hello,

I recently got the SubPhatty which is in that case my first analog piece of gear and I felt in Love with the Sound ( and the build quality too, in fact I sold most of my midi controllers).
I stop to work in one month and I wil not have money for gear in the next three year ( Back to study…).
I decide to spend my last $ in Analog FX but I don’t really know which one to choose, the phaser is I think the one I love the most but I’m a DAW user and the is no Midi version of it for the moment so would be between Cluster Flux and Analog Delay, but again when I read some post on the Internet I feel that if I must buy an Analog delay it would be more the 500 series than the MF-108M.

So here is the dilemma,

Wich one between the Cluster flux and the Analog Delay would be the more usefull with the SubPhatty in term of DAW use for you (This mean that I’ll use Digital Parametric EQ and maybe some Digital FX process after recording.)

Is there anybody that own the Analog 500 series and the MF-108M that can tell that the 500 doesn’t worth to pay 200 $ more ?

Do I need to buy a Compressor to get the Best of the SubPhatty before I go for these kind of FX ?

Thanks by advance.
NoFuture.

I have no experience with the 500 series but had a ClusterFlux and the Analog delay (104M version) at the same time.

I would definitely get the delay over the ClusterFlux; it really expands the palette of a monophonic instrument. You can even use bypass mode to get a primitive loop going for infinite repeats while accompanying it with dry signal, have a midi controlled clock (rate) alternate square wave time modulation such that each clock is an octave (or a fifth) offset, lots of utility.

If you are unsure of which format is best and just want to get something quick to expand your playing while you figure it out, pickup a USED malekko 616 or MXR Carbon Copy analog delay. Neither is midi but both are low-cost and sound great with the little phatty (100% analog and have some modulation). If you buy USED as I frequently try to do, you can turn it over in 6 months and get what you paid for it give or take 5%. You may end up keeping it having it plus whatever you ended up with.

But high marks for the 104M maybe go right for that, it will keep you busy for sometime especially if you are into DAW controlled Midi.

I had the ClusterFlux for about 2 years, liked it alot but found that I wasn’t using it much and despite the mayhem that you can produce with it (a wall of sonic craziness), I moved it out and haven’t missed it.

Thanks a lot for your answer.
I think the most important thing for me is to have a simple way to control parameters and there is a VST version of the 500 series which can be modulated by device like M4L, for the moment it’s seems that there is no VST for the MF Analog Delay.
And secondly there is not just only the format but the sonic difference between the two ( http://www.frontendaudio.com/Moog-Analog-Delay-500-p/9999-13121.htm ).
So I think the 500 would be my choice if I don’t watch the price  Gonna think a little bit about this before spend my last $.

Which DAW do you use? Any of the should be able to control parameters via MIDI without the need for a VST. It’s about as hard to learn as the VST is…

Regarding sound - good organic delays sound great with synths IMO. If you want an effect witht the Phatty, delay is a great place to start, since you have control over just about everything else. Phasers are great, but can become one trick pony’s quickly. The ClusterFlux is a great pedal, but I would chose it second behind the delay. It provides tone shaping and modulation madness like no other. You shouldn’t need a compressor, your DAW will be decent enough at the moment.

Regarding cash. You have three years to get really good at what you want to do with music. From my experience this evolves and changes as you learn, meaning the gear can too. Don’t get suckered into GAS. The best thing you could do is to get really good at using your rig as it is. Then add a playable delay - as others have said, not necessarily the $700 Moog. Save some of your money so you can evolve over the next 3 years, unless you know exactly which direction to go. After many years searching for what I wanted I always found it in the basics & simplicity. All that said, the Moog delay + phatty + DAW is more than enough to keep a dedicated hobbyist busy & creative for 3 years - especially when forced to use only those things to make music.

Hello, for some simple reason.
I think than a part the fact that I really felt in love with the only Moog product I got (Sub Phatty).
I really love the “Handcrafted” term because I have some personal conviction about this that I’ll not debate there.
The build quality is also something I find very good with Moog and finally, I know that if one day for some reason I need money and I must sell my audio equipment, Moog gear is something that I believe doesn’t loose so much value if you take care of your gear.

Hello,
I’m using Ableton Suite, and this is why VST is so important for me because you can MAP every parameters and then make modulation using Max For Live devices ( LFO & Envelop Follower with Multimaps are the two I use a lot) instead of spending a lot more time doing automation, something I hate Tbh each time I try to make complicated automation stuff I spend hours on a sound.
And I don’t find this hard to learn, I just want something that I can completely automate without drawing any automation and I think actually the “Learn” function is the only way to do that in Live.

Thanks for the answer,

After some brainstorm I think I won’t buy any of theses for the moment and just give my money to my bank ( my mother ^^ ) because I know that I’ll spend it very quickly in beer night club etc… if I don’t spend it for gear.
I’ll continue to watch over the web because I don’t want to make some choice too fast and regret it (like I do with Maschine that I decide to sell to get Push( Still waiting the pre order… -_-), and as well as sound an analog delay compared to my built-in daw’s delay I found the price a little bit too expensive just to have those VST control on analog hardware in my actual financial situation.

So for the moment you can consider this topic as closed.

Thanks to all of you for these answer which comfort me about spending more time about thinking of the real use that I can have from these kind of high quality gear than make a fast wrong choice and regret it or worse (In my case what makes me go at first in the digital world was a simple choice, there is a lot of burglary where I live and unplug all my gear everyday to put it in the safe is really annoying and sometimes when I’ve only one hour I just can’t get all the gear out of the safe… :frowning: ).
