Which 'Foogers for my Voyager?

I wasn’t sure which forum to put this in but since my intention is to use them with my Voyager here it is…

I’m planning on picking up an MF104z. I’d like to get a second fooger along with it but have been having a hard time deciding between the 102, 103, 105 and 107. Most demos I’ve found are guitar based and I can’t try before I buy so I’d like to know what people would recommend.

Who owns a 102, 103, 105 or 107, uses them with a Voyager and how much use do you get out of them? For example the Murf is cool but it seems like everything would sound the same after a while (limited number of preset patterns). How often do you find yourself reaching for a ring mod? Is the phaser ‘essential’ to you?..

Dont forget about the signature edition 104’s from the homepage. But if thats not your thing, check out novamusik because with a Fooger, they include an ep2, Fooger DVD, T shirt so you can talk them down a bit off of their price. You get more free stuff when you order more. THey will be happy to serve you!

I think that the Ring Mod has a lot to offer. Frankly its just a wacky effect, it really gets some 70’s sounds out of it which can be anywhere from subtle to invasive, and its very versatrile.

Its a good one to couple with the delay, but a classic is the phaser/delay combo and you still get the LFO to boot.

Heres me
102
I have the 104 102 and 107. I play more instruments than just keyboards/synth and Ive ran vocals and other instruments through the ring mod. I usually refer to this more than any other pedal. Its good in the effects send, its good in the audio chain. Its good for modular style funk. I like to keep everything in the audio chain every now and then and control the FOogers with the mix. So I have a complex evolving patch on the voyager or whatever and then Ill reach over and tweak the Mix on the ring mod for some added goodness. Keep in mind that the Ring Mod will also track the Voyager and you can get more waves out of it by reading Gregs article on Knob Tweak.

104
I didn’t use to run EVERYTHING through delay until I got this one. I think it is so warm, when i turn it on my other Oscs go unstable! Its a great 1 trick Clydesdale!

107
I run different instruments through this one ocassionally. I bought the Freqbox because I was supposed to be getting a 921B but someone decided that they were going to send me a bill so Instead of the 921B and power supply, I got the 107/Cp251 combo. I bought this for its Osc capabillity since I had to sacrifice the 921b. and at the time I didn’t own a Voyager. I don’t use it nearly as much as I use the RIng Mod. Once I got to messing with this unit I fell in love with it, but it still doesn’t get a whole lot of usage with my Voyager, and thats not because I play every day and choose not to use it, its just because I use it mostly with other instruments. I think this really shines as a synth addendum to a non synth instrument, but it also performes extremely well as an extra osc, especially one controlled by something like a sequencer or Cp 251.

Honorable Mention:
CP251
Consider this with your voyager or your delay. Lets Face it, partner, you will have more Foogers so you might as well get this one sooner or later. You will be able to control a lot of things with this unit.

Another Honorable
Vx351
This pretty much enables you to have ultimate interface with your voyager. Inagine having VC delay with the touchpad! (or did you go back tro the OS?) Anyway you still need this one. Imagine envelopes controlling the mix of the ring mod or the velocity controlling the pitch of another oscillator!

ALso worth noting.
Mp201!
You can get yourself a dotcom sequencer.

Read the “Lord of the Ring Mod” article and then try to convince yourself not to get the ring mod.

The ring mod may be cool. It’s also cheap so I may be able to get that and a VX-351.

I went back to the OS so no more touch pad but if the Plan B joystick controller I ordered for my modular ever shows up that has the same functionality (X,Y and Z axis).

I use Moogers with my Voyager. I have 2 of the following: Ring Mod, MuRF, Delay, LPF, Phase and FreqBox.

I absloutely love the MuRF on the main outputs. Out of sll the Moogers, it is the one I use the CV ins the least. I think it is an amazing effect.

You really need the correct cable to use the Mixer Out/Filter in jack on the Voyager.

The RM is superb. It sounds great in the loop of the Voyager. On low settings it is a great tremolo. One of my favorite effects of all time.

I did a few demos using a digi cam on my Photobucket page. (with synths)

Poke around here for some demos:

There are a number of FreqBox examples there and also some Voyager with other effects examples.

The FreqBox is OK with the Voyager. The RingMod is cool as well. The Lowpass filter is nice if you have other gear you might want to run through it as well (like a bass or guitar) - you can’t go wrong with any of them IMO. Maybe the demos will help you decide.

My faves are the 102 ring mod and the MuRF. I like the 102 inserted into the Voyager so that I can get a nice tremolo or some sonic insanity. I like to run the Voyager in mono to the MuRF and place the split “stereo” signals into different channels of my mixer.

Of course the CP251 is used as well as the VX351. I think those are mandatory for every Voyager owner.

I totally agree. I love using the touch screen from the Voyager to modulate delay time and feedback.

It is also worth mentioning the delay has the loop in it, which is really creative!

Some really cool demos there. You enjoy the Prophet 08 I assume??
Do you use the Frostwave Resonator often?

See?!? Youll eventually have to get every fooger.

I don’t think you can really go wrong if money isn’t an option.

Its really difficult to say whether to get the CP or the VX. THey are both pretty much indespensible. If you get the ringmod and the Vx, let your next purchase include another fooger and the cp.

I think its safe to say that needs will present themselves no matter which direction you end up taking.

WHatever you do…take pics.

Eric

Thanks. I like the Prophet 08 except the knobs are kinda lame. Nothing like the quality of the Moog knobs. Sound wise it can make some very nice, animated sounds that are inspiring.

The Frostwave Resonator is an amazing filter and really adds alot to the Voyager. Mind you, the Voyager doesn’t NEED it but some sounds really can take advantage of it. It fattens up the sound quite a bit as well since you can mix the dry and wet signal making multiple resonant peaks - one from the Voyager and one from the Frostwave. If you can find one I highly recommend it. Although I run other stuff through it as well I primarily use it on the Voyager.
