Which amplifier for the Sub 37/ LP2 ?

Hi Folks

Moog newbie here ,and keyboard synths too. I’m a guitar man previously and have a few amps around marshall/fender/vox etc… I’m aware of the line level and frequency range issues that guitar amps have if you put a synth thru them… What amp would be suited for my two new babies… Sub37 and a Little phatty 2. All feedback/ sugestions welcome…

Most guys would prefer to run their synths through a small powered PA system with a sub. That’s not always practical. The Roland keyboard amps have a great reputation in the synth community.

Stay away from something with tubes

I second the Roland KC series. I have heard stuff through the 550 and my father has the 880. It does a nice job.

Eric

thanks for the input… Ive listend to the Roland amps… not thin and sterile sounding ??? I thought they were leaning that way …
trouble is though I am a tube nerd…for my sins …and the geetars ofcourse…

why are tubes abad idea with synths ? what did they use before the transistor ???

all opinions welcome…

I run a sub phatty, sub 37, and computer out (reason, live) into a QSC K12
1,000W PA Speaker with 12" Low-frequency Driver and 1.75" High-frequency Driver. Eventually, I’d like to add a sub that will round out the low end a little bit more. I use 2 of them, and am very happy otherwise. I started with just one for 6 months, and that easily handled everything I threw at it.

For my Kronos and minitaur and everything else I have I use two QSC K10 so far so good but I do pay attention to the volume of the minitaur, I honestly don’t know how well the QSC would handle it if cranked up. I have emailed QSC but as of yet haven’t received a response. I will at some point add a KW181. But for the last several years the K 10 have been great for me.

I may be the alien here, but I often run my Little Phatty into a guitar amp… simulation. Hence I don’t have to (carry a true amp nor to) worry about impedance and level matching.
I’m using Tech21 character series: a Blonde and a VT Bass. I like how this has the synth mixing nicely with guitars.

thanks for the input chaps…

the thing is when playing in a band the keys usually get drowned out easily by the other instruments… due to keys competing across the entire frequency spectrum… Bass low down Drums high /low, guitar middle ground etc
so the guy on keys get nobbled all over…I’m looking for something ampwise which will bring out the colours a and flavours of the moogs but cuts thru the mayhem of the others… a tough call, but Ive been in so many bands (as a guitarist) where the keys are struggling to be heard…

Jon Lord used to have the same problems with Blackmores amps…so he just put his Hammonds thru a Marshall 100watt plexi to even thing out a bit…

Its been mentioned to steer away from tube amps but why ? I am a newbie with synths so beer/bare with me

power amp/ cab setup ??? would that suffice…? which ? and speakers …I love celestions… do they do a FFR speaker/horn/tweeter or what ever…

I need a beer with all this… all opinions/suggestions welcome

I have never tried one of my guitar amps. I think the xxx head would work well but think that the guitar can might not have the range to capture things well or just get damaged trying. Do you use a guitar cab or bass cab or some fully range cab?

Here is an old review of some self powered PA cabs that was a good read.

In a band room situation with guitars & drums I’ve played a Sub Phatty through a Roland Cube which seemed to enable it to cut through where monitor speakers or straight into the PA would not have. Just plugged it straight in like a guitar, was fine. Tried a Blackstar with valves for distortion for recording & that worked great as well

I am primarily a bassist and I simultaneously run my S37 through my bass rig which consists of:
Gallien Kruger MB Fusion 800 head → Fearless F115 8 ohm (full range) cabinet.
I am able to rattle walls, shred eardrums and create roadkill at 150 paces.

If I got a 2nd Fearless cab and ran that rig at 4 ohms I could demolish concrete walls at 50 paces.

Roland KC-550 is the best I’ve used. Really has the full range and power to get the keys heard in a full rock band setting. Used a Roland Cube-80 for a few gigs, and it was not up to the task. The Moog cut through alright (and it always does), but it couldn’t handle the piano and e-piano stuff from the ROMpler. Motion Sound also makes great keyboard amps, but they are expensive.
