Where the hell do I start with my Sub Phatty?!

Hey

I’m completely new to hardware, and I recently bought my first Moog - the Sub Phatty. However, I have no idea how to hook it up correctly to my Macbook so that I can use it within my DAW (Propellerheads Reason :sunglasses: to record.

If someone could let me know exactly what I need to get started (I think I need an audio interface???) then that would be a huuuge help!

Thanks in advance!

Brad

Hey Brad, yep you’ll need an audio interface. Reason can MIDI sequence the Sub over USB and you can run the editor but you’ll need an interface to get the synth sound into Reason. Which one sort of depends on your budget most of the basic ones come with two analogue inputs, the moog will need one. With a macbook either thunderbolt or usb interfaces are good, when you go up in price you are mostly paying for either more inputs or more high quality pre-amps esp for microphones.

I use a MOTU Ultralite which is pretty midrange I’ve found it great sounding & solid & it has multiple inputs which I currently have full of hardware synths, etc. It can output CV directly to the Moog CV inputs which is great too. From Reason you’d use https://shop.propellerheads.se/product/silent-way-voice-controller/

You don’t need a MIDI interface when you use a USB connection from your Mac to the SubPhatty.
And most Macs got an audio input. This is not the best quality audio you get, but it is good enough to start playing now.

apple have moved to a single combined headphone/mic socket of late, so an adapter/splitter may be needed to give an audio input socket for a standard 3.5mm/1/8" jack. Cheap and readily available though.
