What classic Moog synthesizers would you like to have in your own homegrown music studio???
My preferred list is:
1970 Moog Minimoog Model A
1971 Moog Minimoog Model D
1976 Moog Polymoog & Polymoog Keyboard
1979 Moog Multimoog
1975 Moog Prodigy
1975 Moog Micromoog
1979 Moog Liberation
1977 Moog Source
Since I own 3 of my favorite moogs ( and two other non-moog synths) I feel any addition would be welcomed.
I own :
73’ Minimoog model D
79’ Prodigy
81’ MG1
(non moogs are)
79’ Arp Axxe (original version, not the orange one)
and the original
00’ Korg MS2000 ( not the rerelease 2000B)
If I were to go out today to look for a moog to buy it would be any of the following:
The Source..
Sonic 6…
Multimoog…
and everyones dream a modular system.. (especially a fully restored one from my good buddy Kevin Lightner (synth tech GOD)
Last time I was at his house I got to mess around with an ARP 2500 modular !! Not a 2600 ! That thing is not only a beautiful monolithic machine, but also has the best sound of any ARP synth ever released (in my humble oppinion) And It is actually for sale right now(i’m pretty sure)
.. Only $12,000.00 US… And considering there are only about 20 or 30 on earth, thats a damn good deal ! check out any details at Kev’s site… http://www.synthfool.com/
The song M.E. seems to have phasing on the lead sound for interesting results. I might get a MF-103 and have a go at incorporating it into my own songs.
I was listening to Tubeway Army in 1978, and followed Mr. Numan’s career closely for a few years after that…, I probably have his entire back catalogue on vinyl!
It’ll be merely a case of refreshing the old memory!! Thanks for the prompt to do so… I’ll report back shortly!
(Sounds of needle going “plop” into the lead-in groove)
Listened again… Ah what memories… Are you sure that the preset can’t be recreated on the Synth version? And why is it termed “Vox Humana”? It’s even less convincing than the “Vox Humana” on our 1883 Estey Reed Organ http://www.george.shilling.com/images/Estey%20page/Estey.jpg which at best sounds a bit like a goat.
I bought my Prodigy in 1980 as a result of listening to too much Gary Numan, and realising I’d not be able to afford a Minimoog for a fair few years!
He lost it bigtime after the tour which became the Living Ornaments 2 Album, and his subsequent records are full of sotto-voce mumblings. The old Tubeway Army stuff is worth checking out, as it’s a bit more organic than PP or Telekon, but still has plenty of Moog splashed about.
Are you sure that the preset can’t be recreated on the Synth version?
Positive.
The Vox Humana preset uses a special filter board that is not in the synth version. It cannot be replicated in the Polymoog Synth resonator either, I tried. The resonator is a set of state variable filters, which is not how the Vox Humana filter was implemented.
I have a Vox Humana filter that was scavenged from a PM, I plan to mount it in a box for an external effect one of these days.
In reference to the VH preset on the Polymoog keybd, here is what was mentioned by Numan in a Q/A on webb.garynuman.info site:
“Q8. On The Aircrash Bureau’s chorus was the main string sound a Polymoog or an Arp Odyssey? I’ve been trying to duplicate the sound for years because you never left enough room to sample it on the earlier LPs! And would you consider using that string sound again on a track as a nod back at your previous work? I think we fans would appreciate it. ”
“A8. The sound was probably a Polymoog. It only had one good sound as far as I was concerned so it would have been a lower octave version of the high screamy string sound used on ‘Cars’ called Vox Humana. The Roland D-50 can duplicate that sound easily if you have one. I have used that sound since but not in as naked and upfront way as before. It’s on the song ‘Voix’ for instance.”
Don’t know how easy it is to do on the D-50 however, the Voyager will also do a capable version of the same patch.
