Wanted: Recommendation on Fooger you want within reach

I have 3 rack mounted Foogers just to the right of my VOS/LP stack and am gearing up to buy a 102-ring. I won’t have a rack mount for it so the question for you guys is; assuming I am going to have one Fooger within near reach of my kbds, which would it be?

  • FreqBox; use it as either 3rd OSC for Phatty, 4th OSC for VOS or noisebox for bass (Basically leave it alone once set)
  • MidiMurf; use it largely as midi sync’ed drone to accompany VOS but sometimes switch patterns while playing or pull it off Midi rate. Have tweaked the Env with pedal but it’s rather imprecise
  • Lowpass; use either to follow FreqBox or (primarily) with my Bass. Again, pedals work fine and I have a Multipedal as well but no substitution for tweaking filter cutoff and res but once set, I leave it
  • RingMod (coming soon)… need feedback on how you guys use it?

Thanks.

Good question; I believe I can help a little.

I have “all” the foogers - one of each model at least. Here’s what I do and plan to do with them, and how I do it:

101 Filter: use it for tones, drones and animation. I fiddle with it a lot, but not the most - both cv connections and knob tweaks. I tend not to plug an expression pedal into it directly, it would usually get fed via CP-251 or another fooger, but when it is on I may manipulate it manually a little.

102 Ring Mod: use it for everything. I definitely tweak it the most, and change it’s set-ups the most. I use it for tremolo, tone modifying, vibrato, ring modding… It is my go to fooger, however the others support it quite a bit - via envelope controls, lfo’s, ocsillators etc. Use and expression pedal on it and manual tuning during playing regularly. It is the most instrument like of the foogers IMO.

103 Phaser: Love it, but don’t use it so much. More of a production tool than an on the fly foundational player tool.

104 Delay: Use it the most by far. Sits in my amps FX loop, and get’s tweaked via two expression pedals on the fly regularly. Don’t play the knobs too much… I plan to mix and match the fx loop within it quite a bit, but I just haven’t gotten there yet.

105 MuRF: Going to upgrade to MIDI, have the guitar version. I love it, just like the phaser. It has more live use than the phaser, but just haven’t found it’s applications yet, but it is getting more and more attention lately - thus the upgrade. I play guitar, bass and keys, and MID program drum loops, so the upgrade makes sense.

107 FreqBox: Love to hate this thing relationship. It has uses I’m sure, just not sure what they are yet, since I have other favorites that do similar - not exact things. If I ever sold a fooger this would be it, but only because I haven’t found it’s purpose in my current perspective. Still fun to mess with though!!! Great as the carrier for the ring mod.

Some foogers can be a set and forget type of thing. Some like the filter need to be actively tweaked. The freq knob on the 102 is SO sensitive that its hard to dial in exactly where you want it with a pedal.

The Murf makes for a good unit to put by the keyboard.

For me, the freqbox makes a great extra “voice”. FOr instance, if you run it into the audio input of your synth, and you modulate it with the cp251, you can add S&H or something in the background of your synth track to add another layer of texture via the volume knob of the audio input. Another method of this is use it in the audio chain, modulate the same way and use a pedal to crossfade the frebox sounds to create the same textures.

It makes a good distortion for bass guitar. I use it mostly as described above. WHen I get a sequencer, that will probably be the most common destinatio for pitch voltages! Im excited.

Maybe 2 more moogerfoogers not on your list will give you 6 to rack up, and then you’re just a MP-201 to controlling them all.

Just a suggestion. But hey, aren’t they all addicting?
