VX-351 - Midi to CV?

Hi Guys,

Will a VX-351 and a voyager keyboard convert midi sent to the voyager into gate/pitch cv?

Yes. But you will have to scale the pitch CV to somethin useable. (Just tried it to be sure. MAQ to Voyager via MIDI. VX outputs to modular.)

No, 0.986 V/octave I think.

An idea: transpose the Voyager up a semitone or two. So when it receives a MIDI note the actual CV output will be a bit higher. Then use an attenuator to scale the pitch back in tune with your other gear.

Hi All -

The VX-351 outputs 1V/Octave - and there is a trimmer inside to tweak.

Only the first 15 Units VX-351 ever shipped did not output 1 V/Octave.

Funny how this myth persists!

And yes, VX-351 can be MIDI to Gate on the KB Gate out, and MIDI to CV on the KB CV, Pitch Wheel, Mod Wheel, Velocity, Pressure outputs, AND you get two separate MIDI triggered Envelope Generators.

I have one ordered along with a Doepfer Dark Energy, a waveshaper, SEM filter, Wasp filter and polarising mixer.

Should be fine connecting that lot up :slight_smile:

Mine was bought less than a year ago and it doesn’t track worth a damn, it is off by 5 semitones in 4 octaves. So the myth may be based in real world experiance. And the fact that it is bipolar doesn’t help much either.

Hey -

Yikes - sorry to hear about a VX351 KB CV that is out of calibration. Here’s a tip -

Take off the four screws of the back of the VX-351 - you’ll see a trimpot mounted on the back.

Hook up a reasonably accurate Voltmeter to your KB CV Output - Play the lowest E on the Keyboard. The KB CV should be somewhere roughly around 0 Volts. The press the edit button twice - Use the +1 button to transpose the keyboard up two octaves and play the highest E. This should be somewhere close to +4V. Now carefully adjust the trimpot until it is exactly +4 Volts higher than the reading when you played the lower E.

You may need to repeat this procedure a couple of times. It should improve the accuracy of this output. You can also do this procedure with the VCO that you’re controlling from the VX-351 KB CV output and your ears or a tuner.

Okay, is it true the Voyager’s internal KB is scaled to 0.986 V/Octave? Maybe that’s where the confusion sets in.
