Voyager Snare

Just saw this video for the Sub Phatty

Makes me wonder about making snare sounds on my Voyager. How can my Voyager achieve a snare sound like in that vid? Is is possible or is that snare sound exclusive to the Sub Phatty.

I’ve come up with snare sounds with the voyager’s noise generator, but never anything that punchy. it almost sounds like the snare in that vid is a linndrum.

I’ve replicated that sound relatively easily on my Minimoog D in about 30 seconds.

All you need is one oscillator with triangle waveform (for the pitch of the drum) at 16’ octave setting (playing a middle A on the keyboard), add white noise (for the snare springs), select minimum attack, short decay, no sustain, same release as decay for Volume Envelope. Flip the release switch in the mod wheel section to “ON”.
Reduce the cutoff of the filter slightly to cut a little of the highs, no resonance however.

But most important, you need to perform the “overload trick” by sending the output back into the external input of the mixer section, in order to add some punch to the sound. Adjust external level input to taste.
They probably used the “multidrive” knob on the Sub Phatty to beef up the sound in the same manner.

Voilà.

Experiment a little and you should find the snare sound you crave.

Oscillator 1 volume and note played on keyboard = pitch of snare drum and level
Volume Envelope decay and release times = how long the snare drum trails
White noise volume = snares springs level
Filter Cutoff = tone of snare drum
External input level mix = how “punchy” the sound is

This is the reason I love this forum.

Thanks for sharing folks. Off to make new snares!!
