Voyager RME + VX-351 Question (HELP!)

I just picked up a VX-351 and a VX-352. The 351 comes with instructions and a “output adaptor board” for preparing the voyger for use with it.

I was just curious for those who may have a RME Voyager, if i still need to install this thing, or if the connector is only needed if you have a regular Voyager kb. The curiosity comes from that the directions are written solely from the perspective of Voyager kb owners, and since the RME seems a little newer, maybe Moog had the foresight to pre-configure them so that the user wouldn’t have to mess with it.

any help on this one?

..so I opened up the voyager RME to see if what I was assuming was true.

the RME looks VERY different than the keyboard version from the inside, and there’s an entire chipset here that is blocking the place where I’m supposed to include the output adaptor board.

i’m really thinking i don’t need to install this thing to use the vx-351, but i’d rather have confirmation before risking frying anything.

please, if anyone has some knowledge on this topic, i’d REALLY appreciate it. I suppose I’ll go email Amos in the meanwhile.

The little board is only an array of decoupling capacitors. So without it, you won’t damage the unit. But you might get some unwanted things happen. Like bleed-through off CV voltages.
But maybe Rudi could help us with his knowledge here.

Thanks, thats good to know! I’m very curious though as to whether or not the Voyager RME perhaps already has these capacitors installed, as the rackmount unit came out well after the Voyager keyboard edition.

The analog boards are the same - so you have to install the adaptor board.
Have fun,

great thanks for the help. installing the board was very easy once i found out (after unscrewing the bottom board thinking ABCN3 was a connector directly next to the accesory ports i had to move, as the illustrations aren’t too hot) where the ABCN3 port was (in front of my face, heh.). funny how perception can really muddle one’s logic.

response from Amos:

Hi Joseph,

The “output adaptor board” is only needed for the keyboard version of
the Voyager
; its purpose is to suppress ringing in the CV lines running
along the cable between the Voyager and the VX-351. The ringing was an
unfortunate discovery after the VX-351 was first introduced, so the
output adaptor was added to deal with it. Later when we designed the
RME we were able to incorporate this same circuitry into the RME to
begin with, so no extra adaptor board is needed.

Kind regards,

Amos Gaynes

Yes, on the RME the ribbon cable from the analog board “accessory port” connector goes to an I/O board (jack board) which has on it the same network as is on the VX-351 output adaptor board. On the Voyager keyboard the Accessory Port goes directly to the DB-25 connector for the VX-351… so the output adaptor must be added between them.
