Hi, All. After lusting after a Voyager for quite some time I was finally able to cop an Anniversary Edition off of Ebay. It should arrive on Monday. This will be my 1st analog synth purchase so I have some very newbie questions to ask. I did a search but didn’t see a thead that tocuhed on this topic in detai;.
My question relates to how to best integrate the Voyager into my set-up. I use a MPC 4000 as my main sequencer and Pro Tool LE for tracking and recording. Also also have a Motif ES keyboard and a handful of sound modules. So I’m familar with Midi and see that the Voyager has Midi In/Out ports. I’m uses to dealing with modules that are multi-timbral so if I want to use 6 sounds from my Roland Fantom in one sequence I just assign the 6 sounds to 6 of the Fantom’s midi channels. How do my fellow MPCers workaround this if you want to use multiple sounds in one sequence from the Voyager since it’s monotimbral?
I’m guessing that I only have 2 options: 1) sample sounds from the Voyager into the MPC and then use my Motif or the Voyager as a controller for playing or 2) say if I’m laying down a 4 bar loop of a baseline from the Voyager I can record (audio only no midi) into a track in Protools and use ProTools copy region functionality to add it to my sequence.
Here’s what I would do to get the most out of the Voyager/MPC: sample any short, stacatto sounds, percussion, or sound effects from the Voyager onto the MPC. That will then free up the Voyager to use for sequencing basslines (which don’t always sound great when sampled) or lead sounds. Of course, if you’re putting everything into Pro-Tools, you can copy things like basslines and leads, which in turn always frees up the Voyager for more things.
I don’t know what kind of music you’re making, or whether you like to do copy editing (I personally don’t), but I would use the MPC for sampling all kinds of “incidental” sounds from the Voyager, which would then free it up for more “main” sounds.
I’m having problems recoroding midi notes to my MPC 2500 after updating the voyager’s OS to 3.2, i only get small segmants of what i have recorded, can anyone help?
I’d say to record the midi data of your bassline into the mpc just so its tight with your drums the way you like. but since you can only sequence 1 sound at a time from the Voyager, you gotta be selective in terms of why you’re choosing to seqence that 1 sound as opposed to others. Once you do that & got all your samples sequenced & ready to go, i’d take it to the recording phase & lay down your sh*t. After that I usually go & add my Voyager sounds directly into the DAW from there. It is a little inconvenient, but thats how they did it in the old days. One track at a time, basically. Or just sample like mad & play em back from the pads. You should still have LOTS of flexibility with playback & triggering & further shaping of those samples on your 4000.
