Voyager + Modular questions.

I am interested in using a Voyager plus a VX-351 to control a modular. For the most part I think it will work just fine but I have two questions.

  1. How do I combine keyboard CV with pitch bend wheel CV before routing to the oscillators of the modular?

  2. Will the Voyager convert data from the MIDI input to the CV outputs? If so this would be a great interface between a software based sequencer and a modular.

Some modular VCOs have two v/oct inputs so you could simply run cables from the pitch bend out and the keyboard cv out directly to the VCO. If the VCO has only one v/oct input then you’d need a mixer for the CV signals.

I have an Old School so I don’t know for sure but I have heard that the Voyager will convert MIDI to CV.

You probably already know this, however please don’t use a mult as a CV mixer, you’ll need an actual CV mixer like the one on the Moog CP-251.

1.Use a DC coupled mixer on the modular.

2.I just spent an hour trying out using the Vger for a MIDI CV converter. Worked fine. VFXsd to Moog and VX351 controlling the Arrick synth. The only thing that I could not get going in this first attempt for me was the sustain pedal of the VFX did not keep the gate high through the VX. (The Moog however did sustain with the VFX.) (But it is a rather expensive converter!)

Here is a pic of it patched to the modular.

What I have found to be VERY useful is to use the touchpad as a controller of the modular and turn it off so it doesn’t affect the Voyager sound. You can get some very thick layered sounds by playing a poly synth as controller to the Voyager and modular and then modifying the modular with the TS.

the dotcom q106 oscillator has a linear frequency input…that’s where i patch the pitch bend wheel CV from the vx351. keyboard pitch CV from the vx351 to the 1v/oct exponential frequency input on the q106. or on the old school voyager, there’s a keyboard pitch CV out jack on the back panel of the synth.

Thanks. I have not seen anything on the market that looked like it comes close to a Voyager/VX-351 combo for lots of control over a modular. With it also converting MIDI it looks like a great way of controlling the modular with a software based sequencer. I prefer that to buying a hardware modular intended sequencer because I can save paterns. Plus, with software it is easy to break past the 3x16 barrior without breaking the bank. Doepfer used to have a complex MIDI/CV unit but it seems to be replaced by a CV to MIDI converter.

Big birthday coming soon. This is giving me ideas.
