Boeing, what’s going on, man? I cannot believe your selling your synths! It’s not a wind-up by any chance, is it?

No it wasn’t. To be honest, I didn’t need the money. I was pissed off because of several incidents that happened this week involving synths. Apparently if I think the SH-101 is crap, then I’m not a good synth programmer. I think it was, how I wish I brought my great synths to a studio when they called me needing a synth player.

I was on a local music forum, when someone claiming to have been at my gig made this statement.

And unfortunately he is rubbish. Saw you at the Port Mahon and it was quite simply dreadful.

If you want someone who can’t play in time to himself, let alone anyone else or can’t hit the right key, then that guy is your man. However, if you want someone who can play in time and in tune, then look somewhere else.

I took that quite personally, I knew I wasn’t 100%, but in my opinion, I play very well indeed. I went to get some advice from my guitarist a few minutes ago, and when we find out who it is, they will get a good kicking. My excuse is that “I have had no professional training” and I think my timing is perfect. I hit about 3 wrong notes in my first gig. Who the hell does that person think he is?

And no, I am now not selling my synths. I would have expected too much for them anyway.

Best not to take people like this too seriously - could just be professional jealousy. Anyway, it was only your first gig, and you got through it okay, so you must have done well, all things considered.

I have worked with musicians’ whom have been playing for donkey’s years, and have hit (far) more then three bum notes during the proceedings!

Sod this twat - stick with it, I say.

My belief:

Those who can, play out. Those who can’t play stay in their mother’s basement doing step recordings instead of playing out. Those who can’t even do that write “critiques” of musicians.

Boeing Bro…can’t let some dink shred your passion. I’ve bombed a shit load of gigs and have gotten way more bad public response then that when I was starting out. But all that should do is throw a few tires on the fire. Be honest about your playing and improve using the responses from yourself and people you respect…not from some tech head. To counter his claim…SH-101’s are shit…compared to your voyager. I’ve written more songs on a $20 yamaha portasound (my first keyboard) then on my stand-up piano or all my moogs combined. It’s not about the equipment. And remember it’s the “wrong” notes and the “bad” timing that often can take a composition in a whole new direction. Everyone does it and you should be stoked that you had enough balls just to make it through a first gig. If it makes you happy keep playing.

Its actually turned to personal insults now. The rock band I auditioned with on Monday are now going on about a whole load of bollocks about how I presented myself on the night. I feel like putting a pair of steel cap boots on, and finding them, and kicking each person’s head in, but that would only add to my criminal record.

If they have problems with my performance etc then I’d expect them to say it to my face, not on some forum.

I am organising myself another gig, and I’m gonna make sure I prove them wrong each and every time.

what doesnt kill you makes you stronger…selling your gear will just piss you off 6 months from now. AND if i had a $ for everytime i’ve made an ass out of myself on stage i’d be able to buy another voyager! Bottom line is do you play music for those jerks or for you…
every musician has done a performance they wish would never be spoken about again…even the greats! Keep playing, its great stress relief (even better than those steel toes!)

Don’t try to please the critics.

Don’t try to please the jealous trolls in music forums.

You only have to please the audience.

If the audience enjoys the show then nothing else matters. Period. Even if the critics and trolls saw the show, ignore them.

Most critics/trolls are just frustrated musician bullies who write what they do to damage your self-esteem any way they can. If you’re offended by them, then they have succeeded and you need to grow some thick skin.

You’re playing for the audience.

Many superstar groups succumbed to making albums that pleased the critics and have regretted it. They realized that they had neglected their fans in the effort. There are far more fans paying for your meal ticket than there are critics.

And those trolls could be trying to knock you out so they can grab the spotlight.

Definitely. I would have been happier if there were more people at my gig, I don’t think anyone else showed up, except for the other bands.

I have yet to send a copy of the performance to the actual critic, who turned up late and missed my performance. I would like to hear what he would say.

If they don’t like it, then I have two words for them. I’m sure you know what they are! :wink:

Do you think you would consider putting an mp3 on a website, somewhere? Or a link to one? I’d like to hear what you can do.

For all I (we) know, those people were only criticizing your rig. How often is it that you see analog synths of any kind outside of dance clubs and techno records? You’re definitely doing a wonderful thing by even trying to bring it out, like that.

Don’t take the bollocks, just play some more gigs.

Boeing, take it from many of us who have spent more time in front of audiences than we care to remember - it’s not worth your time to respond, you can’t win with some ppl. so don’t go through those ugly ups and downs with them. You were so excited after your gig and the audience loved your sounds as stated above that is what matters. Smile and walk away it’s more of a comment on them, just get ready for your next gig and have a blast.

As per an earlier posting I’m still happy to host your video of the event.

I’ve recently been coerced into helping organise a Classic & Custom bike show up here in Bedfordshire on 18th/19th September (just off the A6 at a place called Melchbourne).

We have a couple of bands playing in a marquee (Curfew, Bastille and The Victims - the latter two being ‘trad heavy rock’ from what I can gather, Curfew I have jammed with on numerous occasions and are far wider ranging).

If you’re interested I’d like to invite you up to do a set, either day (camping is available if you’d like to do both !).

We can probably sort out amplification if required.

I’m more than happy for you to just “come and do your stuff”. It’ll give you a “no hassle” audience and the opportunity to face people - without the pressure of prior advertising.

I have no idea of what the attendance might be - you might end up feeling as if you are playing for the lifts in John Lewis for all I know !

Anyway, just an offer.

PS. I should perhaps say that the weekend event is in aid of the British Polio Society and the National Association for Bikers with Disabilities (NABD) so you wouldn’t get paid - although I could organise food and drinks for you !

I wouldn’t mind coming, but I have absolutely no transport of my own to get myself there. The video hasn’t been edited yet, I contacted Mal and he is sending me some software to edit it with, and has offered to host it for me. Then you can decide for yourselves whether the gig was good, ok, or appalling!

You’ll regret selling all of these, so don’t do it.

I sold TWO Mellotrons when they were worthless in the mid 80s and paid dearly for a replacement in 2001. These synths are a better investment than any shite personal pension plan.

Even if you personally are upset with your performance, put it behind you, practice some more and get out there again. If you really can’t face doing that, buy a copy of Logic and record your own stuff on your PC. That way you can play it to mates who’ll appreciate it.

Whatever, whatever, WHATEVER you do, don’t listen to the opinion of one ‘reviewer’ who at worst was a twonk, and at best may have been having a bad day. The whole purpose of these machines is to have fun with them.

PS I was going to drive the 45 miles or so to see your gig, but was knackered by the end of the week. Let us know when you’re next playing, and I’ll def give you some moral support!

PPS When I was a kid at college, the SH101 was a current model. At that time, not distorted by the rose-tinted spectacles of nostalgia which seem to revere anything old as wonderful, I recall that it had few fans. We were studying keyboard instrument technology at the time and working with a Fairlight, so I guess we were all a bit spoilt, but we assumed the prefix “SH” was an abbreviation of “Shitz”. All of us went out and bought new Prodigies or Rogues…

All my musician friends here always go on about when the EDP Wasp came out, and how they all saved up for it. I was telling one of them that these things fetch ridiculous prices on eBay these days. His response was that “they were only £250 when they came out, but £250 was a lot of money in those days”

I’m not going to sell anything at the moment, even if I needed the money.
