The “control” in VCO and DCO refers to how the oscillator is clocked by a circuit. I does not have to do with how a person tells the circuit what the clock cycle is. A Digital-Analog conversion does take place if using the keyboard or midi in, between the input but before the information reaches the OSC. When the information reaches the oscillator it is in the form of a control voltage. The pitch CV in avoids this if needed.
