Using The Sub Phatty As A MIDI Controller

Hi all,

Those of you who own a Sub Phatty (or indeed a Sub 37) will know the sheer joy of playing with all of those knobs on its front panel; tweaking and adjusting until you get just the right sound, and then tweaking some more just because you can!

Due to its sheer number of panel knobs and buttons (the Sub Phatty has 31 knobs, 29 of which transmit MIDI CCs), it’s a tempting choice as a MIDI controller for soft synths, even in spite of its diminutive 25 keys.

If you have decided to do this, you may find the following information/advice useful:

The Sub Phatty can be connected via standard MIDI cables, but it also has a USB port which can also be used to transmit MIDI data - useful to know if your USB audio interface doesn’t have MIDI connections.

If you are getting that problem when you tweak a knob on the Phatty and the corresponding parameter on your soft synth jumps around like crazy rather than smoothly following the motion of the Phatty’s knob, it’s most likely because the software synth you are using works with standard definition MIDI, whereas your Sub Phatty is capable of transmitting high definition MIDI data. You need to do the following workaround:

1 Open the Sub Phatty Editor and click the PREFS button.
2 In the Editor Settings list on the left, make sure that the MIDI Input and MIDI Output are set to whichever device you are using to connect MIDI to your computer.
3 On the right, in the Global Settings list, make sure that 14 Bit CC Output is turned OFF. This will set the MIDI transmission of your Sub Phatty to standard values rather than high definition values, thus enabling it to communicate with any software synth in standard definition.

Please note that, if you are using a software synth which is capable of high definition MIDI communication, you can set the 14 Bit CC Output to ON and it should work as normal.

For anyone who needs it, here is a list of the CCs for each of the Sub Phatty’s perameters. This can come in handy during MIDI mapping:
