Use Audio Signal as CV

I recently got a Matriarch and have been doing a lot of experimenting. How do you use audio signals as either CV, Gate, or Envelope signals on something like a Matriarch?

I have a MFB Tanzmaus drum machine that I was able to send the bass drum audio signal out of and into an attenuator at -100% and then into the Filter EG (VCA in drone) and that worked. I tried the same with the cymbal and it didn’t work. What’s the difference and what can be done with audio signal?

I guess what I am looking for is an “envelope follower”. I’m guessing you can’t do that on the matriarch?
