updated moogerfoogers

I know there have been several posts related to the updated mechanical housings for these pedals. Most have mentioned the textured surface, however I also noticed that the pots were updated.

It seems that the new pedals have slower pots. I kind of liked the old pots because they were fast, can someone confirm this observation?

Also, is there any initiative to provide a non-voyager companion to the CP-251 (my rack looks incomplete with the extra space)? Perhaps with VCOs, EGs, etc…

I have both Big Briar and Moog MF102s

It seems they started with “slow” smooth pots. My later 102 and a few others have “fast” pots. Then the Freqbox and MuRFs went back to smooth again.

I think the flip-flop was due to concern over the feeling of “quality” in the knobs. IMO, the smooth-feel variant feels better, like I have more control and can find the in-between values. The faster turning ones feel a bit more “cheap”.

Here’s one suggestion for slow knobs: contact cleaner!

When you spray some into a knob or slider, it dissolves some of the tacky lubricant and makes the action more fast. Of course, you have now de-lubed your potentiometer, so this may shorten its lifetime. YMMV

There are lots of suggestions for CP-style 'foogers, either new or re-housed. You’re probably not going to get a VCO, as that’s essentially the MF107. Wait and see I guess. Moog is always on the move.

I have been advocating a CP sized unit for some time, very similar to what you have mentioned (env gens, VCA, ect.) I definately see where theres a hole in the rackspace especially if you are an RME owner who has the vx351/2/cp you have a gaping hole there that needs to be filled.

Of corse you can always fill it with another cp251 and you will still be doing great.

A CP sized unit would be perfect for a sequencer.

& what better for their next MF?

I actually like the quicker pots, though I understand why some people would say they feel looser or cheaper.

The same thing happened when Korg made the mkII versions of their Electribes. The originals had really loose knobs that were great for fast tweaking. The mkII versions had really tight knobs. It actually affects performance if you are really aggressive with your knob turning. I got rid of my ES-1 mkII because of this and bought another original unit.
