tuning wackiness..

so i upgraded my voyager signature from version something (old enough not to have a version number in the software) - likely original from the factory to the 3.x board. i followed the instructions, checked the voltages on the oscillator pitch, and got the variance between low and high to something like ± .03V, which seems pretty close.. at the same time, i decided to tune up my unit to fix some tuning issues i had noticed - mostly that the second oscillator was not in tune with the first, and my tuning knob was constantly at 11 o’clock, so i figured hey, this should fix it.. it fixed my osc sync problems, but now i’ve got some other interesting things, and i don’t know if these are normal, or if i’ve buggered it with my tuning process (followed the text sent to me by Ryan):

  1. if i change the pitch bend range in the DOWN direction, there is no change to the pitch of the basic, non-pitch bent tone.. however, if i scroll up through the ranges in the UP direction, it moves the tuning of the basic tone sharp from on pitch at OFF to over a semitone sharp at 2 octaves.. this is just adjusting the range, not actually laying a finger on the pitch bend wheel..

  2. when i do lay a finger on the pitch bend wheel, the down bend is sharp linearly across the ranges, so for a fourth, it’s only a bit sharp, but on 2 octaves, it’s over a semitone, so bending C5 2 octaves down gets me to a little north of C#3, same in reverse..

  3. the oscillator tuning knobs don’t get me as far as the silkscreen would lead me to believe - i.e. at +6.5 or so i hit a fifth, and past +7 gets me to a fifth plus a semitone..

I don’t know enough about this synth yet to know if these are normal, definitely bad results, something i can fix by re-doing the tuning procedure, maybe this time not forgetting something (if that’s what i did), or if it’s bad enough it needs a trip home..

thanks!

Hi zeroday,

  1. and 2. can be fixed by makeing some adjustments to a couple of internal trimmers. Moog tech support should be able to help you with this procedure, it’s not too difficult.

As for 3, this is normal. The numbers represent semitones so at 5 you should be 5 semitones above the root and at 7 you should be at the 5th. It’s normal however to tune the 5th at 6.5 to give a little headroom for the knob.

Cheers

i misspoke in reverse about the 5th in #3, but you caught that - but the bottom line is that it’s normal to have the actual 5th not match the silkscreen lines..

ok, good to know all around, I’ll shoot the guys a note and see what i can see.. thanks!
