Tuning Problems = Ground Loop

I’m getting some LP TE tuning issues lately.
I have some Moogerfoogers and a patch bay setup.

I know we all like gear so have a look

The thing is that sometimes when I plug some things in my moogerfooger rack the phatty goes out of tune, when I enter auto tuning menu the tune jumps randomly all over the place. I don’t plug anything into the pitch input on the LP, just the filter and gate inputs are pluged in all the time to my patchbay (I disconnected them now to see if problem persists and I’m running callibration now).

I’m thinking the problems with LP tuning are related to ground loop issues. Although I’m not getting much hum and buzz from groundloop I can feel electric currents flowing when I touch my rack and my LP, so there are some ground isseues for sure. Does anyone have that?

Yep! Same here. Plugged my Phatty into a different AC circuit from my mixer and the encoders would all drift from the patch selected. Thought it was broken, plugged it into the same AC the mixer was on, and the issue went away. Thought that was really strange, depending on the patch, every parameter assigned to the encoders slowly drifted from the original setting. Digital part of the Phatty seems quite sensitive to the line noise/loop on mine. The Phatty is an original stage edition.

I’ve heard about that issue, but haven’t experienced it myself.

When I turn the gain real high I can hear some hum (who doesn’t), but when I touch a screw on the rack and the LP chasis it goes away. I’m thinking that because the LP power plug has a grounding pin and all the moogerfoogers in my rack are powered via 9V PSUs, the whole rack doesn’t have it’s own ground and it’s attempting to ground itself though the patch cables. Although I don’t hear much hum maybe resulting current flows are enough to mess with the tuning mechanism. The rack case has a few power sockets mounted inside to provide the power to the foogers, maybe I should link the rack rails to one of the grounding pins. Anyone thinks it’s a good idea?

I had this happen with one effect pedal I tried using with the LP. It hasn’t happened again. There are grounded power supplies on the market. All I’ve found with a ground power multiple pedals.

Edit: I figured out why it never happened except for that one pedal. I usually run my lp dry to a mixer and back out to effects each on a seperate channel. I like to be able to EQ wet and dry seperately. The mixer is grounded so the pedals never feedback to the phatty. When it did occur the pedal was in line with the lp audio out.

I’ve experienced this problem on a few occasions. As cz rider indicated, it usually happens when the phatty is plugged into a different outlet than other things in the signal path. First make sure everything is getting power from the same outlet. If that’s the case try a different power strip or outlet. Also when I was having issues Amos suggested that a passive transformer DI can be used to isolate the audio output from the lines ground.
