Totally outrageous.

Hi, I’m Marc… you might have seen me stumbling about this forum decrying digital emulation of analog, condemning everything that makes music writing easy (despite having implemented much of that which I condemn, at some point), and generally making loud noises about how vintage analog synthesizers are the best thing to ever happen.
But, I have to say… now things have gone too far. I’m an avid analog synth collector, and even when I don’t have money, I’m always scanning eBay for cool analog synths. Or, not cool analog synths. I have often purchased the less-favored analog synths to see if they’re so bad. And, I can tell you… many of the lesser-sought aren’t!
Anyway. I have to confess that I’ve always wanted a Minitmoog or a Moog Satellite. Why? Well, certainly not for features. Let’s face it, it’s basically a toy. (if you want a cool preset synth, I heartily endorse the Roland SH-1000… doesn’t have the Moog sound, but is brimming with functionality for a preset synth). I’m drawn to it purely out of love for the most pathetic of the analog synthesizers… the preset synth, AND for a love of the design aesthetic.
But, as I said… things have gone too far.
A couple years ago, or even A year ago… I would have placed the value of the Moog Satellite at around $225… and that is generous (in about 2001 or so, they often went for about $175). Apart from the Moog thing, there is ALMOST NOTHING THERE. Still, I’ve bid on them before.
Well, if anyone need indication that analog synth prices are still rising, here it is… the Moog Satellite on eBay right now is at $510. Yes, you read that right, $510. I have seen every single Moog monophonic (other than Source and Mini, but pretty close on Source) go for that price at some point in the last 5 years. As an avid collector and synth historian, I have to state that that amount is PERFECTLY RIDICULOUS. As a person who WANTS a Satellite, I can’t imagine how ANYONE would pay that much for one. I would probably mock anyone who paid more than $350! You can get an MG-1, or even a Rogue for 510!
I’m very tempted to e-mail the highest bidder and discover… why. : )
Yeah, yeah, I know… I know… a thing is worth what a person will pay for it… but come ON… the Satellite is fun, cute, and Moog… but… JEEZ.

The Satellite doesn’t even have a proper 24dB/oct Moog filter, it’s a wimpy 12dB filter. Bob Moog designed it but admitted that he doesn’t care to be enamored with it.

And there are some sleeper vintage analogs as you say. ARP ProSoloist is one (which the Satellite competed with, albiet hopelessly), and the early Roland synths weren’t half bad either.

Quite right Marc!

Absolutely ludicrous.

Better off with a Korg Micropreset!

I have several synths with 12db per octave… (even the Moogerfooger lowpass has it as an option), but yeah… there is NO WAY IN HELL I’m buying a Moog without 24dB. That is INSANE… and that the Satellite has 12dB… well, that might even make me drop my assessment of its value. $510 becomes even more ludicrous.

Nice to see you, HR!

This seems like a bad case of nostalgia!

When Jimmy Page was seen playing the Danelectro in the last Led Zep DVD the local music stores tried the sell those crapass guitars like they were quality classics.

Moog is being misrepresented! People tell me “but it’s a Moog so it’s worth it” and I say Dr. Moog did the best he could in an ugly business world. He did make compromising decisions to keep the train running.

This forum is great for this reason. People can keep informed of what they want and what they should expect to pay (used/new) to get it! We can find out what Dr. Moog thought of his designs and the designs that were just a part of the Moog name.

Personally, I think the best way to sell Moogs is through these forums. We are familiar with this crew (ignoring those who sell pills and sex :imp: ).

I’m looking for a vintage moog but i havn’t seen somthing i feel lagit about on ebay.

I can only dream to get a good Vint!

maybe the person that bought it is collecting all the moogs?

or maybe it’s someone who is buying every satellite to gain a monopoly on them so that they can charge whatever they like for them?

Godzilla-

In about 2001, I had the idea of buying up alllll of the MG-1s… they were REALLY cheap at that point… often went for under $200. I thought I should buy up all of them, so that I had all of them, and then could generate false scarcity. I wish I would have, now. : )

I remember the days when I coulda picked up MG-1s and Rogues for $50.

That almost makes me want to cry. I just got an MG-1 on ebay, still waiting for it to arrive though; it ran up to about $450. I justified the cost because it was recently serviced by Kevin Lightner. I want to email him as soon as I get it, maybe find out what exactly was fixed. Judging by the pics from the auction, it looks like the sliders are all new.

I picked up my Rogue Moog several years ago for $125, from an ad that someone ran in the classifieds. No power supply included, but my stepdad rigged one up well enough for me. The guy was also selling a Roland Juno-60 for $200… I wish I had bought that too…

Hi,

Just wanted to say your Rogue case looks fantastic, wish I had relatives that could make something like that! Nice practical design as well.

If Kevin worked on it, I would guess that EVERYTHING was fixed… From what I understand, he does not just fix a single problem. He goes through the entire synth and upgrades everything on it. I am surprised, however, that he would work on an MG-1. If you look at his web site, he only works on the more valuable synths. Maybe your ebay seller was not completely honest with you??
