To Sub or Not to Sub...

I use 2 Roland KC550’s for my live set up (Voyager,Andromeda, T3, XK3 and Pianos). Now that there’s a T3 in the mix I’m thinking on adding a sub.
I’m considering the KCW-1 by Roland (seems like it would make sense to add it). It’s either that or go full PA with tops and subs.
I’d appreciate any thoughts you might have!

Thanks,

Sounds like my setup!

..but that is the question: who will be carrying it? I’ve given up on taking monitors to gigs; that’s the engineer’s job, right? A total unknown whether you’ll get good sound though. :frowning:

I’ve got a dB Technologies 41.15 Stage Opera Sub in the studio. Definitely does the trick!

P.S., only a 10" speaker for the Roland. Size-wise this will be easier to haul, but might leave you wanting for bass (15" minimum recommended).

I actually talked to a Roland Rep at the local guitar shop about Moog and my interest in their Sub. I think the lowest the crossover point was like somewhere (I want to say) 32-24hz. I told him about the T3 and he said specifically that sub wouldn’t suit my needs.

I thought that was a very honest reccomendation.

I have heard though that its not so much about the speaker size as the amount of air thats being pushed bhy the cabinet size.

So, alas I have no subs either.

it’s both, big volume, large speaker ( although 2 parallel smaller ones might also produce lower bass)
afcourse lower volume can be compensated by pipe cothat only gives certain low frequency extra, not a straight/neutral extension to the low end
also don’t forget that low frequencies , use lot of power from the amp to be loud. 200watt should do the trick, mostly , for home and repitions/small performances.
big places need pa

I’m still researching subs but I wanted to share this…

I played my first show with Taurus 3’s at my feet this past weekend and they sounded absolutely incredible! I used a KC550 as a keyboard monitor and DI’d into the pa (2 15" tops 1 18" sub and 3 12" monitor wedges). People were blown away by how great the T3’s sounded. They cut right through the mix and didn’t get in the way of the other instruments. It was perfect. The keyboard player from the first band is a friend of mine and used my rig for his set. He couldn’t resist hitting a pedal every once in a while and I couldn’t help but smile every time he did. The T3’s are simply amazing. Great job Moog!!! Thanks for making these!!

Thanks for all the replies so far!

Interesting.
My father has a kc880 and I thought my Micro was going to rip the speaker to shreads. I haven’t goten the opportunity to test the Voyager through it. Ill bet though that the Voyager puts out too much for those speakers to handle, and the Taurus even moreso. Have you tried them without bypassing the speakers?

Eric

What do you mean by “Have you tried them without bypassing the speakers?”

Both the Voyager and Taurus 3 sound great through a pair of Roland KC550’s when used during moderately loud performances in small and mid sized clubs, as well as outdoor events in front of up to 200 or so people. After that, they need help.

I checked out Roland’s KC880 a while back and I felt it wasn’t the right amp for me. I missed having a 15" when using a pair of KC350’s a few years back, and the 880 reminded me of that time. I really gave the 350’s a shot (for about 4 months) but it wasn’t happening so I sold them and picked up 2 550’s. . IMO having 2 550s (positioned where I wanted them) was much more desirable then having only one (and I really don’t mind bringing 2 amps). The 880 has a pretty large cabinet but it just doesn’t do it for me, just doesn’t sound right. When I only use one amp it’s a KC550.

Over the past 6 years I can’t remember the Voyager ever making me feel like my KC500s or 550s were in any serious trouble (unless I turned them up too loud). A KC350 with its 12" speaker can’t handle as well as a 550 with a 15" can. The 350 still sounds great, but it certainly isn’t as loud as a 550 and the bass isn’t as well represented.

I can’t say the same for the T3’s. They make me want to get a sub even when using 15"'s.

I’m interested to hear what you have to say after you’ve played your Voyager through a KC880.

I’ve been considering an SWR big ben for my sub needs. Anyone have experience with it?
