The Cars- Greg Hawkes

Hello, I’m trying to find out what kind of Moog stuff, Greg Hawkes played on The Cars song “Moving In Stereo”? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Keith

No Moogs in that song. Greg used an ARP Omni and Minikorg for that song.

Didn’t Greg Hawkes play a Mini on “Just What I Needed”???

Nope, that was the minikorg :astonished:

Beasty sounding thing, ainnit?

Hello,

In an article (“Power Of One”) penned by Mitchell Sigman, he states that the single-oscillator lines played by Hawkes on The Cars and Candy-O were from a Roland SH-1000; the same one he’s seen playing in The Cars Live-Musikladen 1979 dvd.
In the article, melodies such as the one in “Just What I Needed” are used as examples of how one-oscillator patches can come across with more clarity
in a mix than big patches that use multiple oscillators.
Don’t auction off those Micromoogs or Axxes just yet.

I kind of know what you mean. I used my Axxe on a couple of my solo cuts. Don’t plan on keeping it, but it rightly displays what you’re saying.

I have the Musikladen show on VHS. The monosynth is most definitely not an SH-1000. I have seen both SH-1000 and Minikorg in person and the monosynth on Musikladen is a Minikorg.

I have a 1980 Keyboard Mag interview where Greg confirms the Minikorg being used on the debut album and Candy-O. He chose the Minikorg because everybody else was using Minimoogs and he wanted something different.

This is a Minikorg

This is an SH-1000

Pretty different machines.

I have a miniKORG 700 . . it rocks.

I reckon . . and I’m going to be blasted for this, that for certain prog rock style solos it actually sounds sweeter then a moog!!

there . . Iv’e said it!

MC,

Thanks for clarifying. Having read your earlier post, I figured that it could very well have been an error on the author’s part, given I don’t have the dvd myself, to ascertain.
I posted Mr. Sigman’s info and context as it appears in the May 2005 issue of Keyboard Mag in the Vintage Sounds column. It may be helpful to send him an email so he may correct the call in next month’s issue.
The bands website is: http://www.berlinpage.com
Also, I did have the 1980 issue of Keyboard that you refer to, which I have long lost along with a large number of earlier issues of CK.

So the cool solo on the song “Bye Bye Love” on The Cars album is also a miniKorg? Did he use the 700 or the 700S? I guess the 700S had dual osc.

Greg also used a Prophet 5 extensively. The Prophet 5 OSC sync patch he used on “Let’s go” is a classic, and he used that same patch on other songs. I always thought that he did KB sounds very tastefully. He made good use of whatever KB’s he was using at the time.

Mike T.

the minikorg is awesome I like to run it thru
a short delay while switching octaves

during a video from that era I thought I saw the Opus3
on stage with him
