Monday night Letterman had a British 3 piece band and one guy played the Taurus 3 with his hands. Sounded great.
After they finished and Dave came over to shake hands, he noticed it and asked what it was. He asked the guy if he made it himself. He asked Paul Shaffer if he knew what it was. No one said the name “Moog” though.
Interesting. The whole show is posted on CBS’s site. I have not seen it though cuz : “not available in your geographic region” ![]()
Dave says “… Is it connected to anything?” which drew laughs
Then after he asked Paul if he’s ever seen anything like it, to which Paul responds:
“… It’s these guys and Rush …” very funny. About time somebody broke out the beast.
What was the name of the band?
It sure wasn’t ELP…
James Blake (not the tennis player)
Ah, OK found it now:

For classic hand action Taurus, Hackett is my fave:
Last seconds of the vids show a Voyager…
glad to say i almost NEVER play the taurus with my hands… ESPECIALLY in public! ![]()
Well, that’s Paul’s Voyager which is rarely played, unfortunately. It’s more of a novelty/eye candy. But I bet if you told him he had to part with it you would end up in a fist fight with him.
Otherwise, he plays a Roland Fantom and B3 in front, then to his right a Kurzweil 250 (believe it or not), and an Oberheim OB-Xa. One of the funniest things I’ve seen was Paul AND Keith Emerson BOTH playing K250s.
Some time ago there was a video walk through of his rig; rare to hear him talk shop. Search Keyboard mag’s site if you are interested.
Thanks for the link Mr Arkadin. Quite sedate as it turns out, maybe next tune, the player will have discovered the filter. ![]()
I watch Letterman pretty often, and I don’t think I have EVER seen the voyager powered on even. He plays synthy stuff on the Fantom mostly. I think he “needs” polyphony.

I used to check the settings on the Voyager to see if they had been changed. Last I looked a few years ago osc 1 was off and Osc 2 was on (from memory i’m pulling this) and I thought that was odd. I can’t see why Id want to not use osc 1. This isn’t supposing he doesn’t use midi or presets.
I think I heard him play it once when they covered a P Funk song.
Paul has used his Voyager once or twice, but yeah, it is very rare that he uses it.
Typical Letterman.
He doesn’t shut up long enough to after he asks a question to let the person answer.
And speaking of shutting up, I’ll just leave this alone before I start getting political…
On another note, the Hacketts (Steve and John) are a must-see live.
