I’m new to Moogs and to this forum (wazzup!!)…super happy with His Phatiness…the capabilities of this machine overwhelm and far exceed (at this point) my creativity with a synth in the best way possible.
I’m kinda-not-so-super-savy with this new-fangled technology and the whole Sysex thing still has me puzzled. If I understand correctly, hooking up the LP to a computer (I assume that’s what the USB on Stage IIs are for) will allow me to save the current patches/settings to, say, my hardrive for storage as well as send .syx files from other people/places TO the LP…right?
If so, I assume that I need some type of program to manage all these files? Is that what the Librarian Editor thing that Moog sells on their page does (in addition to allowing you to tweak patches through a comp)? Are there any other programs out there that people use?
Sorry if my gibberish doesn’t make sense. Any direction is greatly appreciated.
Welcome to the forum! I see we have a Deadhead in the forum now. Way cool! What most people here use for basic patch storage is Sysex Librarian for Mac, which works great, and Windows users are stuck with MIDI OX, unless there is some other (better) program someone with a Windows machine can suggest.
I used USB with no problem via a 3 foot USB 2.0 cable. Others have had problems while using cables that were too long, but my 3 foot cable worked great.
…the USB port is simply the conduit for the MIDI interface, to be used instead of the DIN (regular MIDI) connections.
So, yes, you can direct connect to your computer… a program like MIDI-OX is free, and easy enough to use. I dumped all three sets of factory patches into it, and made my own custom patch set from that of my favorites…of course, they are simply starting off points, not presets!
and the actual files you make are tiny, so you can share 'em with ease.
I know that programming is the name of the game, but using other tones is sometimes a good jumping point. If I wanted to hear the patches from, say, a Stage I LP or the Tribute, I’m guessing that I would need to get those from another synth buddy, right?
I’m sure I’ve seen Stage I presets available on Knob Tweak. Also a Best Of LP patches sound bank made up by a fellow Mooger. They may also be linked through a post on this forum…somewhere. I’m not sure about that, but doesn’t hurt to look.
Sound banks for every flavor of LP’s are available in the software tab of the model you are looking for, on Moog’s site. Currently, my LP SII is loaded with the sound banks of the Tribute Edition.
