SubPhatty Patch Mysteriously Changes Sound

Hi there. Have any of you had the following problem? And how did you deal with it?

I had my song playing in Logic in a loop, and I had loaded up a preset which I started to alter. Once it was altered to my satisfaction, and sounded really good, I decided it’s time to record it. When I went to record it, I pressed the “R” on my record track and started to record. But suddenly the SubPhatty was playing what sounded like a totally different patch. I have no idea why this would be. It’s kind of a bummer as all that time creating such a cool patch sound was lost. Even saved the patch, reloaded it, and it still sounded way different.

Any idea of why this would be? The only thing I did between the patch sounding completely different was arm record in Logic, then as I went to record it, it played a whole different sound.

I don’t get what I possibly could have done wrong. :frowning:

This has happened to me a few times already.

I am using Logic.

Well, I figured out exactly what is causing this through some basic troubleshooting. Basically I will have the MIDI track armed into record. If I press the red “R” and disarm it, then rearm it by pressing the red “R” again, the patch changes. However, if I do not press the red “R” to disarm the MIDI track, and simply click another track, I can arm and disarm all I want and the Moog MIDI track will not change.

Since I now know the cause of this, I suppose I can prevent it from happening again. But to me it’s slightly annoying that I’ll have to remember to save the patch every time I wish to disarm (as I am sometimes used to clicking the “R” or may click it by accident). I guess I can avoid this problem, but is there any more permanent solution to this problem you have figured out? If so, I’d be interested to know what you did.

I don"t know Logic but there must be some kind of MIDI CC transmission when a track is armed for recording, for example for loading the right program.

I would put my hands back on the Logic user’s guide, or use a MIDI application such as MidiOX to analyze what exactly happens at that moment.

Besides, bravo for having succeeded in your investigation and found a workaround so far

See if Logic can disable ‘send program change’ messages. Folks use program change to sync the preset changes across multiple pieces of gear at the beginning of songs. It’s always been too much work for me to figure out how to use in real life but when my band starts opening for Kraftwerk, we’re going to have to figure it out.
