Sub Phatty - Is this a filter problem?

Hi!

I’m a happy owner of a Sub Phatty and today I got something weird with my Sub (after some days without using it…)…

I don’t know if this is normal behavior or not, but it’s weird:
When I select a very low frequency sound (like full noise, no resonance), I can still hear something even when cutoff is totally “closed”. I didn’t get this with my other Phatty (LP2)…

Just wondering if this is normal or a problem with my unit.

Cheers!

have you updated to the latest firmware?

there was an issue with one of the knob modes in earlier firmware, where the knobs would not set values correctly. subsequently some knobs would never reach 100% or 0% at either end of the knob.

set your knob mode to snap mode and see if that fixes it.

cheers

Thank you for the reply. Yes, firmware is 2.0.1, everything went just fine when updating.
I’m not having any problem with the Editor and have tweaked it thru it with no success.

Here’s what I’ve already done:

  • Turned the EG AMOUNT fully down… no effect at the cutoff (seems like it can’t get beyond that value).
  • Power ON/OFF… got me some different cutoff points (just once I’ve got it to play even high pitched notes).
  • Edited the cutoff knob and EG Amount with the Editor.
  • Tweaked every knob while testing this and none have affected the cutoff frequency at all.
  • Changed the place of the Sub Phatty to see if it’s an electrical problem in my house - no changes here.

What I’m going to try today (my last try… already contacted Amos and Moog support):

  • Send aftertouch messages and see if it maked any difference.

Can you suggest anything else?

Thank you.

Just did it (aftertouch thing)… no success.

Tested the audio within Logic and it seems that my filter is stuck at around 50Hz instead of 20Hz (used a Logic low pass filter to check it).

Can anyone help? :frowning:

Just wanted to share my experience on this with you guys.

After trying things that should fix any software problem (the ones listed above), I’ve contacted not just Moog’s support, but also Amos directly. Both were of great help. The support suggested that I should send them the instrument, in a very polite way, wich was good enough. The problem is that I live in Brazil, and it would cost a lot to send it overseas. That’s when I mailed Amos directly…

Amos… what a guy! Since the first moment he shared valuable informations and was very helpful. After explaining what was going on, he suggested that I opened the Sub Phatty myself so I could try fixing it by adjusting a ‘trimmer’ on the analog board. It was actually very easy to do and in the end it solved my problem. Filter is working normally again, with the 4-pole filtering everything, not stuck to 50Hz anymore. Imagine the smile on my face… it was a giant one!

I won’t explain you specifically what I did, since it’s not my call to do it so. Just wanted to share this amazing support offered by Moog Music to a passionate user. If you need help, just call/contact Moog Music. They have the absolutely best support I’ve ever imagined.

Thank you Amos!!

Thanks for sharing your story. It’s always nice to hear happy endings!

in people say Moog is overpriced, you can’t buy this information- well done Amos…
