The update process was a little confusing, that the editor is not a stand alone program, but you must update the firmware to get it.

It’s both. You can start it as standalone but you can also copy the .ddl file into yout VST directory. But i am pretty shure it’s mentioned somewhere in the documents.
The READ ME.txt file in the Moog Sub Phatty Editor folder has the editor installation instructions. It’s a manual process but all you have to do is copy the exe or dll. It also explains how to install the factory presets from the beta team.
