At first sight I thought the layout of the Sub Phatty Editor software user interface was divided according to normal versus Shift-mode functions: normal functions on top in the silver area that’s always visible, Shift-mode functions in the black area at the bottom (which can be collapsed/expanded). However, this is not entirely correct.
- Glide Type, Legato Glide and Gated Glide are all in the upper silver area, while they are actually Shift-mode functions.
- Pitch Wheel, Modulation Wheel, Keyboard Octave and Master Volume are all in the lower black area, while they are normal mode functions.
I understand that you might think that grouping functions in the software interface by ‘topic’ makes sense, but my experience is that mixing normal and Shift-mode functions in the user interface like this makes it harder for me. The synthesizer interface layout presented by the software editor doesn’t correspond to the hardware synthesizer, which causes some ‘mental dissonance’ for me, which is definitely less awesome than it sounds.
It’s like the synthesizer on the computer screen is a different one than the physical one right next to it and depending on whether I work with the software editor or the physical hardware I need to work with and think about it differently.
Anyone else feel like it would be better if the controls in the software editor were divided by normal vs Shift-mode functions, exactly like they are on the physical hardware?
P.S. I also don’t really like that I can only see either the filter or the amplifier Shift-mode function settings, but never both at the same time. Creating the toggle with the two tabs in the interface may have been necessary because of screen size constraints, but it’s less than ideal really.
