Sub 37/Sub Phatty Panning Trick

It’s a silly hack, but it actually works quite well.

(I’m sure some of you have already found this. And,
apologies if anything like this has been previously
posted in the entire history of the Moog Forum:-)

Connect a 1/4" TS cable to the AUDIO OUT jack on the side and another 1/4" TS cable to the HEADPHONES jack.

Send those two cables to a stereo amp (or to two amps) or the L/R of a DAW input.

Set the OUTPUT VOLUME to the desired amount and set the HEADPHONES VOLUME to create a centered image.

Now you can use the HEADPHONES VOLUME to create a pseudo-panning effect by sweeping the HEADPHONES knob.

I call it pseudo-panning because you’re really only changing the volume of one side. If you have two hands free,
you can take the illusion a little farther by gently turning the OUTPUT VOLUME knob in the opposite directions.

Radically opposing knob twists can hint at a more orbital pan. Again, it’s a hack, but it adds yet another sonic tool you can
use in realtime.

P.S. For those of you concerned about putting a TS plug into the TRS HEADPHONES jack:
I’ve asked Amos if this was a problem and he’s going to check it when he gets back to the office. But I’ve been doing it since April with no problems. If you’re really concerned, you could use a TRS plug with a Y splitter and only use one side of the Y as the output.
