Sub 37: Recording a sequence live while sequencer is running

Here is a little step by step instruction how to set up the SUB 37 to record steps while playing the keyboard live when the sequencer is running. This allows recording in Sync to an external Sync source like a drum machine.
Since it took me some time to get my head around this I thought this step by step instruction could save some time.

Preconditions: ARP is OFF, LATCH is OFF
Instructions in brackets are optional

(1. Erase existing sequence via BANK + REC)
2. Set PATTERN knob to SEQ (Display shows SEQ 01/01)
3. Enter step edit mode (BANK + LATCH)
(4. Modify length of sequence to record via PRESET + KB OCTAVE >)
5. Press ARP button to ON state
(6. Press SYNC button to ON-state if you want to record in sync e.g. to a rhythm machine connected via MIDI IN)
7. Press LATCH button to ON state
8. Start sequencer by pressing a key (if SYNC is OFF sequencer will start running now)
9. Set PATTERN knob to REC
(10. Start your Sync source, e.g. start your rhythm machine => at least now the sequencer should run)
11. Play keyboard notes to record
12. Add modulation
13. Set PATTERN knob to SEQ to stop recording

Other Tips

  1. As long as the PATTERN knob is set to REC and you keep on playing the keyboard notes will be added and already recorded positions of the step sequence will be overwritten.
  2. Playing notes Legato will create a TIE between them.

This might not be the only way to do it, but it works for me. Have fun!
I look forward to reading about your tips for live recording / modifying / modulating sequences.

Hi Pixie
Jamming with the sequencer is fun.

ARPEGGIATOR to external SYNC to the DAW MIDI clock
RATE set to 4 notes per DAW metronome click

PATTERN RND, LATCH ON

Press notes and jam along with the sequencer with pattern set to RND or ORDR. Short 4-8 note patterns work best for this.
Some pretty lit beats can pop out. Also, rotate the pattern - BANK < or > for more

I record the MIDI and AUDIO outputs to the DAW for 5 minutes.
Then listen to the 5 minute DAW recording a few (=many) times and pick out the interesting patterns.
Finally assemble the interesting patterns into a song.

MIDI feedback is another fun thing, even though others say it is to be avoided.
btw doing the Random sequence in the Editor is too random to be useful imho.
